Some of my family are milk-men and I live in a rural area but even I cancelled doorstep delivery about 8 years ago when my monthly bill topped £75.00. As much as I want to support local community and local work opportunity I cannot afford Milko prices. Also getting through so many 1pt bottles was a nighmare cos being a bit of a Hyacinth I had to run them through the dishwasher so as not to suffer 'door-step shame' brought on by flashing sleaky returns to all and sundry. When I was running a full dishwasher load of bottles every couple of days I decided enough was enough and headed for Tesco.
Supermarkets are cheaper and the shelf-life is so long I buy it weekly and stock up the two bottom shelves of the fridge with 6pts flaggons. If I run out of fridge room I freeze it.

How does that compare taste-wise to normal semi-skimmed milk? I only have milk occasionally in a cup of hot choc or ice-cold splashed on a bowl of cereal but my youngest drinks a fair amount. I buy the 2 litre cartons and sometimes we run out but other times we end up wasting some as it's gone off so I wonder if I might be better of buying cravendale. Is it ok for cooking too?

Cravendale milk is gorgeous. It costs more than the bulk standard milk though although its longer shelf life will make it more cost efficient for some people. We get through so much milk that shelf life is not an issue for us!

We too freeze our milk and I was surprised to get to the second page here before it was mentioned. Have been trying to convince mother in law to do the same but discovered a couple of weeks ago that she wasn't because "it comes out of the freezer funny". After reassuring her that once it is defrosted it is the same, she is going to try again. She is paying her milko double what she can pay in the supermarket and if she freezes it, she will only have to buy it twice a month.

Thanks ... the extra price of cravendale might be off-set by the amount of wastage we sometimes get with ordinary milk so that's not much of a problem, although I wonder what chemical preservatives might be used to give it a longer shelf-life

As a matter of fact, ordinary dairy milk will last for up to 15 days if kept at the proper temperature (I forget what it is now) but it rarely does (unless you buy it direct from the dairies) because of bad handling and storage practices of shops and supermarkets causing temperature fluctuations. Not to mention people leaving it out of the fridge when making drinks, and my all-time pet hate of people drinking straight from the carton introducing tons of bacteria to it nono.gif

Since then we've all but dumped ASDA, Sainsburys and the other big chains for the old cow juice purchases and buy 99% of our milk from either of 2 other places.
Second choice is an ALDI about a 1/2 mile away that does 4 pints for 99p.

    .

Looks like ALDI will be for emergency purchases only from now on.

Just discovered it's gone up to £1.07

Looks like there is an all round increase in the price of milk everywhere.
2 pints at ASDA and Sainsburys just gone up from 58p to 62p

Was still 74p for 2 litres at our Asian supplier - hope it stays that way

I daren't even compare what I pay in milk deliveries to what Id pay if I got same amount in supermarket.

I pay about £7.50 a week for 2 bottles a day and three at the weekend.

I ilike having it fresh on the doorstep each morning and we have a really friendly and reliable milkman who I feel we'd be letting down if we went down the supermarket route.

For the time being Im going to stick with this but if our regular milky ever stopped or retired I would stop having it delivered as I don't think we'd get anyone as reliable as him.

We've had some in the past who really shouldnt be in the trade!!

Ill just think that im saving on petrol to get from supermarket regular to justify it.

I can get four litres (that's about seven pints) for approx £1.60 at Asda. Sometimes less. I keep it in the fridge at all times and never just leave it out between cuppas. It stays fine, and believe me, I can't stand milk that's not fresh.

My milkman used to deliver about four in the morning - by the time I got up in summer it was already well past its best, even in a covered milk box. I used to have to ditch loads of it. So for me, the supermarket route is the best.
