How are you feeling today ikkle? You sound better. And you have inspired me to bake too!

Rups- I got quite a bit of pain early on too (still get some twinges now), I'm sure it's fairly normal, but if you are worried call the MW.

Rebekah- good luck for this pm, hope it works. I know a couple of people who have had them and they worked so fingers crossed for you. On the subject of shaving I may need to ask DH to attack my hair, I can't see what I'm doing and will end up whipping the whole lot off if I'm not careful (which I did last time, trying to even it out, complete disaster!)

Having tonnes of movement today, more then made up for the few quiet days I had so very pleased.

Hugs for anyone feeling low today, I hope you feel better soon.

Hopefully fluff is getting mummy cuddles now!

Need to get on with some college work so that I can submit this asssignment before baby comes, just can't motivate myself to do it, will have a go tonight once DD in bed. She is refusing to go to sleep at the moment so DH is up and down with her for ages. He argues with her about laying down for ages too, I think we should try laying her down saying good night and leaving her as she will get used to going to sleep again, will see if i can persuade him to let me take over putting her to bed, at least until she settles. I can't drop that afternoon nap yet- I'll need it myself when the baby comes!!

Bumps- although I measure bang on I am now having to wear a bump band over my maternity jeans as I can't do them up, I stick out about 3 feet in front- will have to try and sort out a pic. Think it's cos I'm so little there is nowhere else for it to go.

Has anyone got any little spots on their tummy? a bit like burst capiliaries (i get them on my face when I'm sick), they are coming up around my belly button, don't think they are stretch marks, but perhaps this is how they are starting? Got one now, but I can live with that (my badge of honour!)

    hi all,
I haven't had time to read back since I posted my birth announcement - barely have time to eat :p I hope everyone's OK.

I have now written my birth story. It's kinda long and I was told by the mdwife/obs/health visitor it was classed as a traumatic birth so you may want to pass but here it is:

    Wednesday
    20:00 Think waters broke
22:00 Certain about waters so phoned hospital to say I was coming in.
22:15 Arrived at the hospital, was told that they’d give me a pessary (sp?) to start labour after they’d done a trace on baby’s heart rate for 30 minutes. Had an SHO try to give me a cannula for IV antibiotics. She failed on first attempt so I asked if someone else can do it as my veins are really dodgy (she looked relieved :p). The midwife called an anaesthetist who apparently wasn’t happy to be called for an IV until he saw my veins and realised that it was a difficult job. He eventually found a vein in my hand but could only put in a pink cannula - I think the size order is pink, green, brown and they normally put in the biggest when in labour in case they need to do a blood transfusion quickly but the anaesthetist decided it wasn’t possible.

    Thursday
07:00 Midwives finally happy with the baby’s heart trace so inserted a pessary (sp?). Husband went home for some sleep as we were told it’d take at least 4/5 hours given the fact I wasn’t dilated at all.

09:30 I’d been getting 4 contractions every 10 minutes since 9am and the midwives were refusing to give me pain relief/call the labour ward so I could be transferred to a birthing room and have gas & air. I called my husband who came back and became my advocate, pointing out I’m not one to complain about pain unnecessarily.
I haven’t the foggiest about the timings from now on.
An obstetrician was called who eventually agreed I needed stronger pain relief than co-codomol so arranged for me to go to the labour room.

Midwife there was refusing to give me gas and air as the anaesthetist had been called for an epidural. I was in lots of pain by now. Was examined and was 4cm. I was given gas & air. My cannula got blocked, anaesthetist came to epidural and tried to save the cannula. Seemed to manage it. Locum anaesthetist called – cannula died. He stropped at the ‘incompetence’ of the previous anaesthetist and asked for a brown cannula then actually looked at my veins and decided on a green. I was glad for the epidural and gas and air as not only was there contractions but the anaesthetist basically dug in my arm to get an iv in. It died 10 minutes later. The first anaesthetist turned up, wasn’t happy with the placement of the second cannula, ended up putting one in my foot.

Hadn’t slept since a nap I had Wednesday afternoon, not eaten anything other than dextrose tablets since dinner on Wednesday and only sips of water. Had a seizure. Woke to a room full of people. Obstetrician apparently wanted to increase my medication – my husband pointed out that it was hardly going to help as it takes days to build up in the system.

Ended up on my back in stirrups while they tried to encourage baby out. Eventually declared I needed to be in theatre for a ventouse (sp?) delivery – I was NOT happy but my husband talked me into it and promised he wouldn’t let them do a c-section unless very necessary.

    Thursday/Friday
In theatre – feeling in lots of pain despite the epidural, anaesthetist kept upping the dose. Eventually there was a comment that if baby didn’t come out in the next 10 minutes I’d need a c-section. Baby arrived 5 minutes later at 00:04 on Friday. 4 minutes into his daddy’s birthday – I think he was just holding on.

Don’t really remember anything else – the midwives tried to get baby to latch and failed. I vaguely remember being encouraged to hand express and failing, at some point baby was declared jaundice so he was put on light therapy. Then someone took him to the special care baby unit as he had high infection markers and needed IV antibiotics. But these are all just snippets, I don’t remember him being taken or even when he was taken, I don’t really remember feeding him and I haven’t a clue where I was all this time.

Baby Alex was on special care for a week – I stayed on the post-birth ward and kept visiting SCBU. He was being fed formula and I was expressing using their double electric pump.

Once home I was trying to get him to latch, expressing and bottle feeding. Despite a lot of support from my midwife, health visitor and the breastfeeding support team I just couldn’t keep it up and Alex couldn’t cope with the little amount of milk I could express.

So... My plan had been to use a birthing ball, walk around having an ‘active’ birth, a mobile epidural and breast feed. None of this happened and I have spent a lot of time feeling guilty for not breast feeding. Oh and Alex has been over feeding so the health visitor has suggested a dummy which works but I hate using one, I’ve always said I’d never use one :(

Not a great experience and not one I’m going to be rushing to repeat anytime soon but I got a wonderful baby boy – now just need to survive the sleep deprivation.

Loads better thanks Gemma, I don't know what was up with me yesterday just felt so low. My OH has been home today so I've had a bit of company too. I've done a half and half cake, half is vanilla half is chocolate and I'm going to put some butter icing on it too :)
