Wow you sure do write a lot. I was away for a weekend 3 weeks ago and it took me all this time to catch up! Next week is my last week at work so you'll probably see more of me on the forum - for now I mostly read and don't write.

Thanks to whoever posted the nursery stickers - they look cute and I may go for them as well. I was looking at Fisher Price ones but the reviews say they tend to peel off after a few months so was reluctant to buy them.

Our baby was having a lazy Sunday and hardly kicked all day so we ended up in labour ward late in the evening strapped to a monitor. Had to go back on Monday and having a scan tomorrow to make sure all is fine. MWs said all looks good and the scan is just a routine follow up procedure. The MWs were absolutely nice and lovely - I hope all of them are like that in my hospital.

As far as bedding is concerned - we bought 2 mattress protectors, 4 fitted sheets (white and yellow), one sleeping bag 2.5tog and a couple of blankets. Will probably buy another blanket just in case the other two get puked on.

And a question to those who will be using reusable nappies. I worked out that it's not any cheaper than using disposables but possibly I am missing something. I think I'd need at least 30 nappies to start with and 10 wraps, so that's about £400. However, looking at rating on the Nappy Lady website re drying time, containment and absorbency, I like Mothearese Wizard Duo most - they are sized so I'd probably need to buy small and then medium size - ca £700-£800 and that's excluding boosters. So where's the saving?

We've gone for a one-sized set of nappies, which should do us up til toilet training. We chose pocket nappies, to speed up drying time as we have no tumble drier. Our whole set came to about £240, and included all the accessories (bucket, wet bag etc). We got 15 daytime and 2 nighttime nappies, so we may end up buying another 5 or so nappies for daytime and 1/2 more for nighttime depending how we get on.

Sized nappies do work out more, although you need fewer in the larger sizes as they wear less nappies per day than when they're tiny. I think the set you're looking at seem very expensive, 20 nappies would probably be enough I think, from what I've read?
A lot of the value comes in being able to reuse for a second child, but I'm still expecting to save a fair amount on nappies for number 1!

I'm not doing the reusable nappies for moneysaving but for the environmental impact. But, one thing you haven't taken into account is possible resale value of the nappies (which may or may not be much, I've not been keeping an eye on eBay for those).

I've just bought the intro offer from Little Lambs (thanks Ikkle...) and for £135 got 20 nappies and 4 wraps, some laundry liquid and two nappy bags - and I think that includes the boosters. They are also sized, so will need more later on but as you use them for less time they hold up better for resale/reuse on a later child. I will probably need more nappies and wraps but would like to see how I get on with these first before buying more.

I was thinking of washing the nappies every 2nd day so at any given point I'd need 3 days worth of nappies plus a few extra to allow for different drying times. That's how I came up with 30. Per Nappy Lady one wrap can do ca 4 changes, so I'd probably need 2 wraps a day. But you are right I would need fewer of the larger nappies, I never thought about that.


I do know that you can resell nappies on Ebay but I never sold anything on Ebay in my life and don't know how to go about it. I know it's meant to be simple - I think I'm just too lazy to find out about it!

Hmmm you've got me thinking now. It seems most 'kits' come with 15 nappies which would seem to be just shy of two days' worth. Little Lambs' 'birth to potty' kit (so 2 sizes of nappies) is 40 nappies + 12 wraps.

How many nappies make up a load? I think I'd rather do 1 load a day, if it was full, than 2 every 2nd day. And then of course there's the drying time as well (although we do have a dryer if needed).

I'm expecting to do one load every other day, but our nappies are very slim fitting and quick drying. We have 15 to start, but are planning to buy more once we see how we get on with them so will supplement with disposables if necessary while we get started. 1 bucket/wash bag full = 1 load, so will see how quickly it fills up and put it on whenever it looks full!

edit: I'm going to give them all a wash next time I get a sunny weekend day, so I'll let you know how many I can fit in the wash then!

I have the Little Lambs birth to potty pack, I don't have a child in nappies at the moment, but I used to wash 10-12 at a time, every other day. But I did use disposables overnight...

I used mothercare smart nappies with my first and shall use them with my second too. They were about £40 per set (although I noticed in MC the other day they had 70% off) I had one set of each size, didn't bother with newborn size as used the freebies. I got a few extras i acquired on the way, so had about 10 of each I washed a mini load at the end of each day and they dried overnight on an airer as they are two piece. I don't own a tumble dryer. Check to see if your local council do any contribution to reusables. Mine do £30 per child. They have saved me a fortune. I did use supermarket own makes when my DD started sleeping through, but one pack would last me a month.

Sorry, just looked n the MC website and realise they have been discontinued. But, apparently they are bringing out a replacement. Hope they are just as good.

I don't do a lot of washing I do about two loads a week and for me the extra effort and electricity for reuseables just isn't worth it. Would be something I would love to try if I could get one of this we wash them and ring them back for you services lol. But no good old environmental destroying disposables for me.
