I suspect the reason is simply that Santander didn't want it, rather than RBS not wanting to sell it.0 -

The old maxim quality and service never go out of style summed up that bank perfectly. If you banked with Wiiliams & Glyn's people looked up. It was probably the nearest thing an ordinary mortal could get to Coutts & Co., curiously another RBS owned bank.
That's a great post, but I think those days of exceptional customer service are difficult/impossible to reach nowadays. The invent of computer systems has made quality banking harder these days. If we had everything in branch it'd make customer satisfaction extremely easy! Instead of a bank manager, a computer rules the roost now.0 -
A poster Dr_cuckoo3 very kindly did some research and found that one of Williams & Glyn's Bank's predecessors, National Provincial Bank is also still registered. Curious isn't it?
One poster Earthboy writes that Santander might simply not want to buy Williams & Glyn's from RBS rather than RBS not wanting to sell it. I'd say more than likely. They wouldn't be able to match the operational standards.
Thanks to both of you. Let's find out if people would like a Williams & Glyn's type Bank back again. It may not offer free banking, but who'd be willing to pay £52 a year?
Question !: Would you like a Williams & Glyn's Bank back on the high street?
Question 2: Would you be prepared to pay a modest sum for that?
Question 3: Would you tolerate some modernisation in design so it might install itself in a shop unit for example, but keep its logo and other designs?
There's a small poll from the 'Santander crushed man' for MoneySavers on this forum, for anyone who'd like to respond.
Enquiries at RBS this morning, say that Santander have not bought the Williams & Glyn's brand. Also of note is they tell me customers continue to say they don't want the change and are switching in large numbers, yet staff are unsure whether the purchase will take place in the end because the formalities and arrangements have been delayed twice now apparently.Dr_Cuckoo3 wrote: »I see that National Provincial Bank are still registered at Companies House too

Interesting thread.
By the way mints/flowers/newspapers etc disappeared from my RBS branch in 2008 coinciding with an end to being paid overtime for Saturday etc!0 -
Further to previous comments on this thread (very helpful, thanks), I have today (2 June) received from RBS the transfer form to keep my current account with them, rather than transfer to Santander. There doesn't appear to be a cut off date.
All I need do now is decide which branch in Scotland. Any advice? Although the staff are unable to advise they were very helpful. All DDs and SOs will be automatically transferred, plus all monies in (salaries etc.). Cash points will continue to be used (Visa). It is only the Sort Code which changes. The only downside I can see is if you want to pay a cheque in, it'll have to be by post. I haven't visited my English branch in years, do all my banking online.0 -
Hi , you can pay in cash and cheques free of charge at any Nat West branch using a paying in book. Yu can order one of these via digital banking. For info they will allocate you a new account number in addition to a new sort code. My account is now at the Oban branch.0

Thanks for your help. Have filled in and returned the transfer form. My present branch recommended St Andrews Square, so hope it all works!0

Raised query with RBS call centre. They told me that those accounts that hadn't been transferred at end February would be transferred to Scottish branches by 11 June.
My request to transfer to an Edinburgh branch was made in March - we are now at 11 June and nothing further heard. Does anyone know when RBS now plan to carry out the next batch of account switching?0
