18% less than you paid for it? Or 18% less than you thought it was worth?

18% less than the asking price, which was more than we paid for it. We will just about break even on what we paid for it and what we have spent on it (assuming the euro does not go into freefall!).

    Welcome home, SDW.

We are thinking of buying somewhere near DS, and new baby, in Florida. But I'm torn between a holiday place and a permanent move. I love heat!

    Sounds good!

Why not try an extended holiday first if you can, to see how you feel?

You could even have a home exchange holiday - we did several with our Spanish house.

I have wintered in Florida for many years and owned property too.
My advice would be to rent not buy and to keep your UK property and rent it out while you are away.

    Thanks, SDW and Mrspb.

I'm not sure about the foot in both camps approach - we'd be out of social circles in both places.

Hadn't considered renting, though. Might work - although lots of houses up for rent here at present.

I think if you can live in the sunshine but keep a place to stay in Britain, that's an ideal solution.

It is in one way, but you have the upkeep and maintenance of two houses then, and finding someone to look afrter the one you are not living in.

We did do five years full-time and three years half and half before we finally made our move back

If we want an extended holiday in the future, we will rent.

We're going to look after grandson for 60 days (max insurance) when DIL goes back to work.

Have to see how that works out.

Plenty of cheap condos and town houses around, but the maintenance fees are around $200 pm.

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time Polly. What a treat - childminding in the sun :).
How would the medical insurance work if you decided to move there permanently? It would terrify me.

That's the major issue, Errata. OH has type 2 diabetes and hypertension. I am as fit as a fiddle - now! But will decay, obviously, with age.

I have an acquaintance with a son in the US and one in Australia; she and her OH are making the move to the US.

So difficult to decide - I love the part of Wales where we live, I love Welsh life. But I hate being cold and love heat, too.

I'd need to find a U3A - or start one!
