Of course access to phones is much better now, but when I took 10/11 year old kids away for 1 week trips, phoning home was banned for that very reason.
Tough love & all that.
Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh,
Here I am at Camp Grenada
Camp is very entertaining
and they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.
I went hiking with Joe Spivy
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.
All the counselors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators
And the head coach wants no sissies
So he reads to us from something called Ulysses.
Now I don't want this should scare ya
But my bunkmate has malaria
You remember Jeffrey Hardy
They're about to organize a searching party.
Take me home, oh muddah fadduh, take me home, I hate Grenada
Don't leave me out in the forest where I might get eaten by a bear.
Take me home, I promise I will not make noise or mess the house with
other boys, oh please don't make me stay, I've been here one whole day.
Dearest fadduh, darling muddah,
How's my precious little bruddah?
Let me come home if ya miss me
I will even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.
Wait a minute, it stopped hailing,
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing,
Playing baseball, gee that's better,
Muddah Fadduh please disregard this letter.0 -
I must also add that I hated the residential trips, even though the kids were usually well-behaved, especially at night. Ours always slept, and I did too.
However, taking 60 or 70 kids away for a week is fraught with potential nightmare scenarios, so while nothing truly awful happened, I was always acutely aware that it could.
Here are just a few of the things that did happen. (look away now Lydia!)- we became slightly involved in a police hunt for armed robbers and witnessed their capture
- we were falsely accused of doing hundreds of £ worth of damage to a vintage bus
- one of our kids decided to climb the curtain wall of a castle as an 'interesting' way to reach the top....and succeeded!
- we lost 13 children on an orienteering exercise
- various broken bone incidents: the most frustrating being the child with brittle bone syndrome who failed to hear the words, "Mind that hole!"

ITs so complicated, I was all set to fill up yesterday using a 5p tesco voucher (from the codestacking first on HUKD but in the weekly newsletter) but then read on hukd that Sains were due to cut prices and do vouchers starting today...and then someone added to the thread that Morisons would be doing a 12p voucher starting today (and probably cutting prices to be competitive). So yesterdays planned trip to morisons to pick up anyhting of interest on bogof/half price is rescheduled ot this evening and an expensive retrunable item will be added to the trolley to get the spend from £20 to £60; to be returned of course for a refund a few days later.

Sainsburys are due to start their clothing sale, which means you get 25% off their clothes, which are generally quite well made. If like me you have a voucher for additional nectar points, you'll be able to put that against your spend too. However Sainsburys has also just dropped their petrol price 2p per litre and having bought clothes and spent over £50 you'll get an additional 5p per litre off (that's my understanding anyway).
I've been planning for this for a while and the lady in my local Sainsburys has kindly put some clothes aside for me. So I'll fill up with petrol while I'm there and save about £25 pounds on clothes and about £3 on petrol while getting a load of additional nectar points.I think....0 -

I will be filling up later this week, probably. When I do a 40 mile round trip, the petrol station there's 4p cheaper than the cheapest here. So I wait.0 -

Does a money off petrol voucher only apply to one tank.

The small print normally mentions a max number of litres and also only one vehicle although I hav egot away with 2 cars once but the operatives tend to frown on that sort of behaviour...I think....0
