The next big village has a chinese takeaway and two indian restaurants. They are a godsend at present as our oil fired cooker broke down at the end of last week and it will be 2 weeks before an engineer can come out. We have dined out twice this week, had takeaways twice, slow cooked once and microwaved M&S food one night.

We have spent what feels like a small fortune over the last week and are really not enjoying it at all.:(

Oh no! Have to say, i really do not miss a range, The only thing i think is unbeatable in them is toast and, i don't eat that much toast. I think a small electric oven is a really good standby. Do you keep yours on through summer? That must get gruesome with the price of oil these days?

Economies of things amaze me. Our old small village had nothing, but the nearest big village had two restaurants at one point three, bunt one excellent one closed due to the owners splittingup. Also the first restaurant, having been there thirty years or so, closed down early in the crunch.:(' one of the restaurants does chi chi pizza take out, there was an indian takeaway in one of the three pubs, a chinese restaurant and takeaway (opened pre crunch and went down well) then the chinese also opened a chippy, which riviled the existing chippy, which was only open til nine as main money spinner was chips for kids in the boarding school.

It was astounding how much people will spend on food, especially as no green grocer (a very good destination butcher and a comminity owned violage shop and a budgens type store or two) . In fact, a very healthy little high street.

Here the takeaway numbers astound me in our local towns, some even deliver as far as us, mainly thr chinese, but we have not found a good one yet,:(. We live near the poorest part of this county yet there are loads and loads of takeways and loads and loands and loads of hairdressers and beauty salons, all staffed by strange orange people, often with hair styled on badgers or racoons and with no eyebrows of there own, but so many eyelashes i think they cannot see out.......which might explain their hair choices, orange skin combo.

The local college has loads of beauty students (i went. And never again', i thought it would be mse, instead it was a profoundly depressing experience), the students who 'did' me told me there was no employment and not enough business to keep the numerous salons open. The two who did me were mothers who get whatever ema is now for being at college, and so its a good option for them to keep studying at something even though there are no jobs and they don't seem to learn very well: they are as orange and badgerfied as the ones who do have jobs. A

Also, why can beauticians and hairdressers not spell, luxury is not alluded to with names like 'nails 4u' or 'nv' or envi ( they are big on envy round here apparantly) or various attempts to include the word 'beautiful' in ways that make me think of bernard matthews.

I just don't get it. Any of it. I just want to find someone who can do subtle looking highlights and follow instructions about how to cut my hair (nothing like they havye ever done before).

Score is 18 (plus 6 others she's not bothered to visit). Been to many countries for many repeat visits (France, Spain, US, Netherlands). Also been to countries that aren't countries any more (Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Macau, GDR).
I've only been to one that she hasn't (ecuador) and one former country ............ Scotland.......:D

But not the £5 annual fee.
Point taken about 100% being misleading if it doesn't include bonuses though.

Found these cashback sites occasionally useful. When bought DD her first macbook, used credit card with loyalty points plus cashback site plus the education discount page to ease the pain!

Still takes forever to get the money. Best do what you can at purchase time, then forget about it and it's a nice (unexpected) bonus when it turns up (and yes they do go bust so nothing arrives so don't spend the money before you get it).

When I retired 16 years ago, aged 42:j I'd been to around 40 Countries.

OK, I don't feel so bad now.

    I've yet to turn 42. :)

20 but that includes countries I have only visited whilst in transit on long haul flights and have driven though on the way to somewhere else!

I’ve spent at least one night in 76, and been to several countries that the Queen hasn’t.

I’ve also lived in 4 of these for at least a year (This isn’t including the Soviet Union, but is including Post-Soviet countries).

For anyone that’s interested, I’ve lived in Ukraine (Kiev, Odessa), Russia (Moscow, Krasnoyarsk), Georgia (Sukhumi, Batumi, Tbilisi) and Spain (Malaga), not necessarily in that order.

This will be 77 on Sunday as I’ll have Azerbaijan to add to the list

Standing for re-election today on two local councils and also a London one (not LA), so I have a feeling that I might not be around later on! I’m also standing for an election with the Georgian government for the Georgian Chamber of Commerce in London (I’ve been a representative for 8-ish years), so this is going to be a busy one!

Perhaps I am sneaky so I book two rooms to make it look like a platonic friendship.

In any case, I should also point out that it was an Ibis hotel and cost £30 a night. I like to think that if I was having an affair I would at least book a Malmaison or something a bit more upmarket like that.

Or in anyone sane’s mind, pay for everything in cash, so it definitely throws her off the scent (I’m not cheating Sopho)

How long ago did they damage it and do you have a claim number (or did you have one)? It may be you can still claim. I have a claim with a different airline at the moment and I can't find another case I like so they have given me up to six years to make a claim.

EasyJet are the only airline I’ve flown with so far to break (outward journey) and lose (inward journey) luggage!

Looking at the list, the Queen is a bit light on South America. I couldn't count Argentina or Venezuela for the same reason:(.
When I retired 16 years ago, aged 42:j I'd been to around 40 Countries. One of my loves was Travel so I backpacked around many Countries in the years after that. Unlike many Travel bores, it's been about re visiting places, not Country counting. In fact I don't know how many I've been to, although probably somewhere North of 120. Instead of counting sheep, when I can't sleep, I count Countries, I normally get to about 90 by the time I'm snoring!

I don't set out to country count, or I wouldn't keep going back to the same ones, but I would like to get to 100 different countries in my lifetime. If you aim too much higher than that you have to go to some dodgy places. I'm currently about 1/2 way there so need to get my skates on. I have not travelled widely in Eastern Europe, so that's big on my to do list; nor seen much of Asia, so that is too.

Libya and Iran are both places that I'd like to see, but I'm not counting my chickens in terms of getting to either. I'd also like to get to the rock churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia, but that's a bit of a trek, so that may have to stay on my wish list.

I love reading about other people's travels. There's a woman called Lois Pryce who used to work for the Beeb. While The Long Way Down was big on TV she travelled down the length of Africa on her motorbike on her own and without the support crew. Amazing.

Funnily enough, I've never been to Japan or China, although I have been to Hong Kong and most of SE Asia.

I wonder how many people realise Vatican City is a Country even though it's in Rome?

A really nice Principality to visit is San Marino. Hop on a cheap Ryanair flight to Rimini, see how the Italians beach Holiday, then get the Bus up to San Marino for a couple of nights. Easy to do on a budget, even there. Useless information alert ;) There's never been a Grand Prix in San Marino!

    I'm impressed!

I didn't know who or what Sopho was.
I have the Google dictionary extension to Chrome and if you don't know what a word means you just double click it and a box will appear with a definition.
It doesn't always work but seemingly Sopho was worthy of a definition all of her own. It must be a wiki thing.

Japan and SE Asia is the part of the world that attracts me now as I've not been.

Not bothered about USA, the Caribbean, Africa. Done enough of that. Not keen to try South America, Aus still a bit far but maybe one day.
Like the idea of more Europe, Med, Middle East and Far east.
