I have a strong suspicion that my gross will double but my net will go up by less than 40% - such is the poverty trap
MY plan was to earn as much as possible in this 12 months and then look to earn according to the tax/benefits thresholds thereafter but they have cunningly brought in part of the changes from 1 Jan 13 rather than the start of the tax year
I am thinking I could have a pretend self employed business (buying and selling on ebay or similar) to make sure I do 24 hours a week, then not actually earn anything and just make use of all the benefits, wouldn't be a lot worse off.I think....0 -

Not only that, but your time worked will go up and your time spent in NPT company will go down accordingly:(:(. NHS beaurocracy:
I got to the GP weeks ago and get told, could be nothing come back if it doesn't go away.
So I go back and get referred for a scan. Scan privately and the results are back with the GP within 48 hours. Except there are no appointments with the GP for 4 weeks! So I ask if the GP has seen the results, "Not yet". So I make an appointment with a different GP with the same practice, get to the appointment and they are running 1 hour late. The GP is then forced to read the scan report during the appointment (it stillnot having been reviewed ) and I then get referred to a consultant. Make consultant appointment and go to surgery to collect referral letter to find the admin is running behind and it is taking over a week to right referral letters. So I go and see the consultant anyway and tell him the letter is in the system.
That is 5 x:mad: fails from the NHS.
That's how my experiences have been going with the NHS lately. I don't know if you've seen, but Hertfordshire NHS is looking to get Foundation Trust Status. I don't know whether this will make things any better though, I've tried looking at their website and there's a lot of stuff I'm not looking for and nothing that I want. Ho hum... If they carry on like this much longer I'll start looking for a private GP.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Spent this year under a 72% marginal tax rate- was looking forward to next year only being 42% but now it is going to be 67%
How big is the marginal rate? If it only lasts for a few thousand ££, then it should be worth crossing.
All very well playing games and keeping under earnings barriers, but if you want to progress a career, how long can you keep earning very little just to avoid tax.
Above benefit levels, the way to avoid hitting a tax threshold is to shove the excess into a pension.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Tax disc was good - I got this so wrong last year.
Rate is for 10k. I don't really trust pensions as they can change the rules at random and you can not do anything. I quite like the idea of being a company and having alternate years of paying myself lots and paying myself nothing to max benefits and minimise tax.
I don't really believe in universal benefits but if you are going to get rid of child benefit do it properly and incorporate it in to tax credits where the delivery mechanism is already set up rather than doing something both unfair and complicated with the tax system.
I know we are all middlish class here but how can it be fair that there is no cap on isas - surely letting people have say 20k tax free would encourage people to save enough for a rainy day, beyond that they are just a tax perk for the rich. How big is the marginal rate? I am someone else who only has painted toes in the summer.
Summer starts tomorrow.
We are off to visit friends in the middle east tomorrow night, so I am having a manicure and pedi in the morning. Will feel much more glamourous. I won't be, but I will feel it.0 -
Hi all. Not been around much. Doc says I am not fit for work still. Yet under ESA my pittance of benefits have gone. Still after over 40 years of paying out to the government, would I expect much more. Did hope so.
PN my friend, did I tell you my wife and I are leaving the West country? Back to sunny Reading. Going to buy with my sister in law, who after 30 years and 3 kids has been deserted for the younger model.
Well 23 years down here is 23 years too long. Be really glad to get back to civilisation. Thankfully getting my mental health back in order. Been a long and difficult trip. Yet must admit I am so looking forward to getting away from down here.
I have known my sis in in law from a kid and she looks on me as the older brother and her 3 kids are my God children and we are close. Going to sell here and selling her place and buying something that will do for 3 of us and her youngest. As long as I can have a decent shed so I can set up my keyboards and computer and not having 2 ladies moaning about empty beer cans, I will be happy.
Already networking for a couple of days work a week up there and looks well easy.
Like you PN. would really welcome some return on my savings. A likely story. Hope you guys are Ok and will talk soon.0
