More seriously, I've just been reminded that when I bought this house the surveyor recommended a drain inspection. I had one done, but it was a bit chaotic - I kept trying to get the company to send me a bill and the dvd of the camera going down the drain, but they never did, so I gave up in the end. But I do know they told me over the phone that most of it was fine but there was some trouble from roots from the small tree in the garden, and they'd advise me to take the tree down and then get the drain fixed. I'd forgotten about it, but now I feel I'd better get on with it.
So, do any of the NP know anything about such things? The tree is pretty small - maybe 10ft tall with a trunk about 4in in diameter - so I could easily saw through the trunk myself. Should I do that? I'll check with the planning department on Monday to make sure I don't need permission or anything. Then what do I do next? I know there's stuff you can paint on stumps to stop the tree trying to grow again, but actually I'd rather not have a small tree stump in the middle of the lawn. So what would need to be done to get rid of it down to lawn level? Then presumably I need a drain company to fix the drain. Is there any point in asking my buildings insurance company if they're willing to pay for it, or is there no hope of that since I knew about it before I bought the place?
I rmember the tree. It is highly ulikely to have a tpo from council, and i personally would saw it down myself. To get it to ground level you will need it stump ground. A tree surgeon could do tree down and stump gring on that little critter very quickly, and the tree part will be cheap. Have some one else do it if you want it stump ground imo. He will probaly also charge to chip it, and take it way.....but the tree itself you can probaly take to the tip, do you think? Its not big.0 -
If a tree is protected [a] you'd know it it'd have a tag on it.
For a tree as small as you'd describe I'd just take a saw to it, down to ground level.... then find a way to get the rest out. Getting the rest out can be a pig though.0 -

Not all tpo trees ate tagged! Lydia, i am very sure yours won't be, but t will almost certainly be a search option on council website!0 -

Thanks lir. I think sawing it down would be a good thing for the three of us to do together as a family - combined drain protection and outdoor education and family bonding. We could then cut it up into small enough pieces for me to take to the tip. It's not far away and I could take the Christmas tree too - it's been sitting in the garden looking dead since it came down at New Year. Then I'll find some one to do the stump grinding.PasturesNew wrote: »If a tree is protected [a] you'd know it it'd have a tag on it.

So if there's no tag on it and nothing came up on the searches that were done when I bought the place, then I'm OK to cut it down? That's very useful to know. Thanks Pastures. It would be lovely to strike while the iron is hot (motivation-wise) and take it down tomorrow if the weather's nice.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Thanks. I can't find it on there - just a phone number to ring if you want to find out. However, I had a local authority search done when I bought the house, and there wasn't a TPO on that. Also, I remember looking the house up on the planning portal before I bought it, and it mentioned the smokeless zone, but no TPO. Strangely, the planning portal no longer seems to have the tab that tells you about restrictions like smokeless zones and conservation areas - or else I'm looking at a different bit of it or something. But it definitely wasn't there when I looked before. The forecast for tomorrow is cloudy but dry, so I think we'll have a go at it in the afternoon.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? lir, re something you wrote on a different thread. Have you seen this site for walking sticks? You can get lots of different colours and patterns and they'll even customise:
http://www.switchsticks.com/Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

lydia, re councils and websites: due to cutbacks some councils are cutting some of the info on their sites as they can't afford to keep it up to date and as out of date info it can be wrong. It's a shame, but lots of stuff that I've looked for has gone too. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? how do all
I mostly shop at sainsburys and do a bit of a mid week top up eg milk at tesco and that only as I can walk to it. Really not keen on Tescos and mine rarely has bargains in
Use Aldi for their special offers, again as its walking distance and its next door to Tesco! We had a good co-op but it closed down in November and I miss it.
No morrisons, asda or lidl anywhere near.. probably why tescos rarely have bargains..
Planted a couple of apple trees today and wondering if I can fit in a plum tree, need to see how tall they grow first.
Been a cracking day here in Suffolk, went down town on my bike as the local constabulary were postcode marking cycles, as it turned out, the very nice young CSO gave me a pen and a sticker and you have to do it yourself! Last time they punched it on my frame but not anymore:(
The NZ ref for the england v wales rugby game is rather delish.....:D wouldn't turf him out of my bed... england 12 v wales 6
Blimey, didn't realise you were from the same part of the country as me....if you don't mind me asking, which bit (you can be non specific, North or South will do).
I'm South, deepest south and as far as you can go before being in Essex. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I found them quite expensive....I decorate my own now (crutches rather than sticks but have decorated a stick too), much cheaper and exactly how I want them.We made it! Good morning all you NP
I have a 7 and a half minute walk to work and do my shopping on line, don't mind who with but usually with whoever does the best deal on delivery atm.
DH has just bought a second hand electric bike, has any NP ever used/had one? He is going to try it out (been fiddling with the battery) and if he likes it proposes we both buy new ones.0
