I want to get the sotting room decent. I am fed up of the filfthy old carpet and ripped Nd puckered wall paper. One nice room. Its not too much to ask is it?
The walls Re really fragile, the paper is puckered and ripped, sort of shredded, in the corners...from movement of the house maybe? Anyway, i need to get it off too paint, but the plaster will be fragile. I think its a mixture of old p
Laster an guess is has modern patches...e.g. Some fireplace work hS been (badly) done and replasters Rou d there...i know that becUse the wallpaper is hanging off on one side.
How do i get thje cruddy paper off without damaging the plaster? If i damage thie plaster it goes from being a slosh paint Bout and get a cRpet for a few years job to a bigger job we cannot afford with the kitchen work this year...
Simple, paint over the crud and ignore the problems for now.
Next question? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
To be honest I'd say your choices are two:
1] Accept that you will have to replaster the room - rip the wallpaper off, get the plasterer in. Job done. Then at least the walls are flat and you can paint them cheap white for now, which will look better.
2] Take the paper off carefully then beat yourself up when the plaster blows or slides off in one big WHOOSH.
That plaster's blown. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Tip toeing round it won't save you from the fact. And if you go slowly, slowly and you think you can get away with it - you know once you've finished it'll look !!!! THEN start to blow.
Just get a plastering quote for the one room - and paint it white, forget about the posh paints for a year or two, feeling happy that the plaster's sound. As for the floor - what's under the carpet? You could just get a couple of big cheery rugs.0 -

Not possibe. The paper is too far gone. Seriously, imagine a cat on a cat scratcher, then imagine a tiger doing the smae thing in the corner. The puckering etc will, i think, look worse painted. I don't mind painting over basically ok paper, ut this is very far gone.0 -

Sigh. I might have to live with it. Needs a talanted plasterer because cant have modern flat plaster and really needs old plaster, not modern stuff.
Floor is...blah, concrete. Plus side, there is a damp proof course. Will be having wood longer term but could live with clean cheap carpet for now. Just fed up of manky old carpet.0 -

Never stop lir, it gives us all a mental workout. And it's more fun and less predictable than Sudoku. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Lir, I know it isn't what you are looking for, but would you be able to put a thick lining paper or textured paper (such as anaglypta) over the top as a temp fix? It isn't what I would choose, but it may make it look better for a while.
Then get some cheap roll carpet with built in underlay, maybe a room-sized remnant.
Could that work? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Being random, I want to own this shop. I've never been there, and it's too far to go to, but I love it.

Some one in the inyer home board just gave some great advixe for the puckering and shredding....if i can get it flat then painting over seems more reAlistic.
Now i have to decide what i would do with the mpbrickwork on the fireplace.....i am not a fan of interior exposed stone or beick, but the bricks are ok in thje inglenook, not original but a good match, the cement mortar on the other hand.........0
