To put that in perspective, these are my stats on BE. (I use the Optimise For Speed profile option = target 3dB SNR margin):

    Uptime: 1 day, 8:14:41
    DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,408 / 17,579
    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 949.85 / 1.99
    Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.4 / 18.3
    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.4 / 23.5
    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.3 / 4.9
    System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----
Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): BDCM / BDCM
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Link (Remote): -
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 221 / 0
    FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 20,040,515
    CRC Errors (Up/Down): 328 / 336
    HEC Errors (Up/Down): 183 / 139

If I did a resync I'd get even more speed, but I know that at some point the Down SNR would wander towards a low value and so cause packet loss issues. Your 21dB attenuation would be more like 23dB with a BE connection (due to the way it is calculated on ADSL2+ versus the ADSL you are currently on). Therefore you'd likely get similar speeds to me, if not better. :)

A friend of mine has said that the 'loss of framing' and 'loss of signal' stats are quite high on my line, as are the uncorrectable errors (lower values are normal).

The error seconds is also high (lower values are normal).

These three indicate there is a bad connection or a lot of noise on the line which will need to be investigated by BT.

Your line seems a lot healthier than mine!

What are the dB attenuation figures? What does this mean? Thanks.

I would suggest rebooting your router (to clear the stats), wait a few hours then post the stats here again. (You can reboot via the web page interface, or simply switch off, wait 20 seconds, switch back on the router power and wait until it reconnects). That way we can see whether you have an issue or you are only seeing historical data.

http://www.siteguru.co.uk/be/ADSL2PlusForDummies.pdf will give you some troubleshooting tips.

http://beusergroup.co.uk/technotes/index.php?title=What_do_the_Bebox_Stats_mean%3F ... relates to the BE router, but the explanations are relevant for most ADSL connections.
  • Wow, I've rebooted my router a load of times. I'll look into it again tonight.

    Thanks for those links.

I'm aware that she's on an "old" package!O2 have tried to get her to switch to a new package with some financial inducement or other.:rotfl:
However, the point I was trying to make was that ,for "normal" internet use an O2 LLU connection is fine - cheap and reliable IF you have an existing O2 mobile. As far as I could see the OP wasn't looking for guarantees on peak time throttling in his post. If he wants to watch HD video streams at 7:30pm then maybe its not suitable.

I'm lucky enough to be on a legacy O2 package. Am really happy with it (14.5Mbps d/s synch, 12.5Mbps d/s throughput), but if I was choosing a new ADSL2+ supplier now I would have second thoughts as the ability to stream BBC iPlayer HD in the evenings is pretty important to me!

As it is the only thing that would get me off the legacy O2 package is FTTC.... and as they are just installing it in my town right now that is hopefully about to happen! (although for some reason, despite marking up the street, our cab hasn't been done yet some two weeks after the rest of town seems to have been completed :().

Hi, have posted before on orange and sky broadband site and now here as have been offered quite a good deal. Just a bit worried about this traffic shaping that is being talked about on here. My current stats are

    ROUTER STATISTICS

    System Up Time: 87:09:24
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
    WAN PPPoA 244027 303709 0 0 0 22:47:16
    LAN 83 0 0 0 0 87:09:24
    WLAN 1387963 1033852 0 0 0 87:08:59
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 800 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 16.4 db 17.0 db
    Poll Interval: (secs)

The last time I did it was 1.4meg! Plus had no broadband over christmas. My exchange is Bowmansgreen and they have BE/O2 and talktalk in there. I understand anything else is just BT packaged up!

Have decided that all the bad customer service posts on here about Talktalk that was a no no and thus to enquire about O2. They 'promise' me minimum 2meg and up to 4meg - is this really possible?? Maybe Bod1467 or someone could help please.

The deal I have is that because my mother in law has had a O2 mobile since 2008 they will give me 1/2 price broadband for 12 months which means if I have the evening and weekend phone (currently on BT) with the broadband it will be £16.50 a month inclusive of VAT which is loads cheaper than the rubbish sky connect at £17/month + BT line rental and also have supa dupa broadband speed, well it is if all you get is between 0.8 and 1.4meg at mo

Dont want to jump from frying pan to fire by not being able to use the broadband in the evening! 0.8meg is just about better than nothing! By use it me get emails and surf net, son on xbox live and maybe hubby on ipad or is that expecting toooo much lol:rotfl:

    many thanks

Have just used http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php and although on samknows it says exchange is 2.83km as crow flies the line length is really 4km so if the old 4.5km max distance for broadband is still current then presume that is the reason why slow speeds:(

Also note on this that it says 3900kbps, presume that is the speed? If this is so why can not BT and everyone else in the exchange do this - or is that the million $$$ question lol

Must say it is fascinating going through all this (does that make me geeky) and say thanks to all those that help

    Noise Margin 16.4

That's why your speed is low - they have set your margin high to compensate for noise on the line, to try and maintain a stable connection. The only way to resolve that is to get the line fixed to remove the noise.

I've changed the micro filters and ran the broadband through the test socket for a few day when I first saw this pdf but family events like mother in law going to hospital meant didnt get chance to do the rest!
However the main thing I need to know is about this traffic shaping that is being talked about on here. Is it likely to affect me in the evenings or not?
