Claiming DLA and Esa

  • A medical may not be needed in the first stage of ESA (It's not for allot, that's 6 months first stage) If you get on first stage later down line you will have to attend a medical examination to see if you can go into the main phase.

Don't even think about DLA yet, and to add you don't even need DLA money as well, ESA will give you allot especially in main phase.
  • I have no idea what the medical would involve, as my son has not yet reached the age that he would be able to leave school. If you do a search on these boards, medicals are mentioned quite often, so there may be more detail in other posts.

Perhaps you do not know the extent of your friend's problems. Perhaps your friend has not been entirely honest when filling in the forms.

Getting DLA for depression is not likely to be easy, especially as you have not mentioned any care needs.

Well like I said leaving the house is a struggle and my other half does everything for me, if I didn't have him I dont know what I would do, he is the one who goes out shopping and gets food, gets me the essentials, would he be my carer? If I didn't have him I would never leave the house, for anything.

And she is my best friend so I know the full extent and I think she would be honest if she lied.
  • I already explained about the medical on page 1.

The medical for ESA...the face to face medical (which in your case would be much more likely necessary for fact finding than not) will be a computer software driven assessment against the benefit criteria (descriptors) carried out by a healthcare professional. It forms part of the evidence used to assess entitlement to ESA main phase (from week 14 of new claim) by DWP. You'd be asked a series of questions like... did you enjoy your journey here... what hobbies do you have... etc.. inferences will be drawn from appearance, behaviour, demeanor and of course answers given and other (medical) evidence presented.

I wont be able to claim JSA because I am unable to work.

But you may well be found capable of working when you claim ESA.
  • When it comes to the time that my son needs a medical, I think he will need me to help him - he wouldn't understand those questions Muttley! And even if he did, his speech is so poor that the person carrying out the assessment probably wouldn't understand him :o

Hmm... em... The assessment phase lasts 13 weeks... the main phase starts from week 14 if you qualify for it. In reality the actual assessment may not occur at exactly this juncture... but for financial purposes it will.
