hi guys i got a valiant 837 fitted last week all new pipework and radiators , At the moment the house has no carpets etc and i have it on in the morning ang night for an hour via a siemens wiresless remote.

i went in tonight and turned it on for 5 mins and watched the metre (last 3 digits) spin like a sprinter..... it actually went up 1/2 a unit with that time im on a metric meter 1 metric unit is 11.05 kwh so in 5 mins used about 6kwh

i have the new type metre and its dated 2009.... the house temperature was 12.5 and i turned it to 17.5

where do i start because somethings not right????

can it be a fauly gas meter?
faulty boiler?

At present im staying at relations until the house is refurbed and my relations use 2 units a day gas and house is roasting ........

help!!!

When the boiler first fires up with the radiators cold it will run at its maximum output.
In your case this is about 28kw. it will throttle back after a period.
I suggest you run it for an hour checking you meter before and afterwards.
Multiply the meter reading by 11 to get kwh. So if it is running on maximum for an hour you'll see around 2.5 units.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    1/2 of a unit, = 5.5kWh = 16p.

The Valiant 837 has an output of 37kW so say 40kW input.

so in 5 mins it will initially use approx 3.5kWh

Really dead on 5 mins? really exactly 0.5 of a gas unit?

    6.03pm--- 8343.100
    6.08pm--- 8343.780

    room temp 12.5 target 17.5

npower go fix 8 with daily charge of 37.40p per day and unit rate 3.185p excl vat
    --1 metric unit = 11.05 kw

so guys is something amiss or am i being anal???

That's 90kW per hour! Must have a turbo setting on it...

So in 5 mins it has used 0.68 gas units = approx 7.5kWh so appears to be using 90kW.

I am no boiler expert - there are lots of gas safe fitters who vist this forum who may comment - but it is hardly likely to be a boiler fault. Is the flame a nice light blue and not yellow? A leak of that magnitude would be noticed if it was near the boiler - the neighbours would hear the explosion!

Ditto a leak near meter would be noticeable - you would hear it, let alone smell it.

Possibly meter? you are absolutely sure of your timings and readings?

Is the meter display running smoothly i.e. not jumping?

Has the supply been off while the refurb has been taking place? Otherwise the coincidence of CH install and meter fault developing simultaneously seems unlikely.

Well you are right to be concerned but wrong to make the case based on a single set of readings.
