Does anyone know if I am meant to cancel my existing bank account once the bank transfer is sorted? I bank with Lloyds and have a credit card and loan with them (no OD), would they even let me cancel my account?
Thanks for all your help so far! I can't think of anything else at the moment, much to the detriment of my home life and uni work
If you don't have an OD then I don't see why they wouldn't let you close down the account. Is the loan linked to the bank account? NatWest wouldn't allow me to close our account with them because they took the loan payments straight from the account, but there was no OD there either. Payments go via CCCS now and the bank account is just dormant. I might ask them again.
The CC is a seperate account altogether and shouldn't have any affect on the bank account situation.DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421

Yes the loan was linked to the bank account, although I have cancelled the direct debit payment now. I'll leave it for the time being but will cancel the joint account with DH (empty anyway!) and DH will cancel his account with them too. Thanks
I now have two available bank account options as we were approved for a joint HSBC account. I was thinking of using my Natwest account for bills and CCCS payment and the joint account for everything else like food, petrol etc (sending across a fixed sum each week). Does anyone know if Natwest or HSBC linked to Barclaycard, Lloyds, MBNA or Nationwide? I read about the linked bank and offsetting issue so I thought I better ask!0 -
Well done to all the new starters ... With Christmas rapidly approaching, its going to be a different experience for you all.
Remember, any questions / any concerns, please feel free to post here.. We wont judge ( we've all be there, and some of us are going to continue to be here for the next few years ).
If your just setting off and are worried about creditors, stand firm, they cannot have it if you donot have it. play by the rules of the DMP, treat all creditors equally.
Remember, you have a right to live, so make sure you have enough food / heating etc before you even start to consider your creditors.
Dont worry about threatening letters, Defaults are good, No one will come to your door collecting, and no debt collector is permitted to gain entry to your home if you are out as long as it is secure. ( not that this ever does happen... but one to be aware of ) ..
To gain access, a Bailiff would have to be instructed by the courts, and be in possession of a court order.
Good Luck to you all.LBM - Oct - 08 DMP Started - Feb -09

2spicy - I am worried about Christmas already! Luckily I bought a few things when there was an offer on at Toys R US, but I am nowhere near finished based on previous years. My biggest worry is disappointing my kids. They still believe in father christmas and I know it sounds silly, but I don't want them to think they've been bad based on what they've previously had for christmas if that makes sense? I have bought them smaller stockings this year though...0

If they are fairly young then they won't notice a second hand toy. You can pick up things from charity shops, car boots or through the ads in the local paper. Freecycle is a good website to look on for free second hand stuff and there is always Ebay. Maybe we should just all get together and do a swap shop!DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421

Baby DS actually has a 2nd hand toy for his birthday this month (good old ebay!) and I also bought some bits with swagbucks from amazon, so he is *nearly* done. DS had a 2nd hand refurbed Nintendo DS for Christmas last year, this year I am going to get him some games with a trade in credit from Blockbusters, but it never looks very much iykwim? I managed to get them bikes from father christmas from Toys r Us for about £56 each, which saved me loads on Halfords prices. I just need decent stocking fillers. It's the other cost of christmas too that mounts up - food, alcohol (though we aren't big drinkers) etc. We won't be buying for other people but I know that DH feels guilty for not getting his parents anything!0 -
well marbles have sent me another tree, ironically with a leaflet from the office of fair trade saying to ensure you pay your priority debts first :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: On the plus side this months conversation telling them nothing has changed was actually with a very pleasant young man, who explained that after another month has gone by they'll accept my DMP, the poo thing is that they will have added 3 months worth of charges and interest:(:(, i agree i did use my card but at that time i needed my card to live i was in financial dire straights, bless him he really did see it from my side but there was nothing he could do, and to file the lettersLBM 2 and the OH is onboard sept 12, DMP will start on the 1st November, DFD who cares as longs as it comes:)
1 year down 5 to go and now under 30k and 10% paid off :beer:0 -

Well it sounds like you have got things well in hand, but I know what you mean about all the other stuff. We aren't big drinkers either but we used to get in all the spirits and mixers etc. Now we just buy some wine and beer and not much of that - and when it is gone then it is gone. Stocking fillers are a killer because it takes a lot to fill a stocking and if everything is around a fiver..... well it soon mounts up. This is the sort of thing I used to put in to make it look more.
A great big bottle of cheapo bubble bath/shower gel anything to get them clean, boys ain't good at washing.
A big triangular shaped chocolate nougat bar.
Thick socks - also works for gloves and hats.
A satsuma in the toe. Mine never liked this but it was traditional I told them - also works for nuts.
Chocolate orange
A pack of fat pens/pencils etc.
Buy a smaller stocking.DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421
