There are people who go there in real need...people with mental health issues, learning difficulties, disabilities. Yet none of your training will have anything to do with this. You are not given the extra time needed to help vulnerable people. All you have are targets...how many people you interview...nothing to quantify whether you helped them or not.
The best thing is the 'mystery shopper'...yes, there is one. When they come in, they make themselves known and jump the queue, get seen first and get special treatment...regardless of who else is waiting.
If you want a job helping people, support working, key working...counselling are much more rewarding careers.
Okay, so some are not overjoyed by my comments...but others have come out in agreement.
matey, i work at the jobcentre now, and what you are saying is a load of crap, we have specially trained people to deal with people with "challenges". im a floor manager and i have to deal with every type of customer going.we help the customers as best we can, but as the sign outside says, we are the job centre.yes we will help you back into work, but we dont have time to listen to your every little problem.and as for the mystery shopper, what cupboard have you been locked in, they havent done the mystery shopper for nearly two years now.
i think you have an overinflated opinion of yourself , and trying to scare people off just shows you obviously were no good at your job if you didnt feel like you hadnt helped anyone.0 -
From my time working in the jobcentre I can tell you the role is what you make of it. The rules and regulations are very restrictive, and at times you'll feel you are chasing arbitrary targets and putting pressure on people who in an ideal world need some breathing space to deal with a lot of the other issues in their lives...
However, just because the system isn't perfect doesn't mean that you have to be totally ineffective in your role. If you take a person centered approach to your role, and remember that even though the rules are the same for every jobseeker that each client will need varying degree's of support, then you'll be fine. Its hard enough walking through the door in a jobcentre without the advisor making you feel like a piece of dirt. Explain the governments expectations of a jobseeker, then move on to something productive and actually help your customers. Think outside the box : ont just spend all your time giving a customer a boring jobsearch through the interal computer systems, try and show them jobseeking resources that they wouldn;t have found had it not been for your input.
To be honest I think anyone who has been a job seeker in the last few years is actually in quite a good place to take up a role like this. When I worked there I found the advisors who were most ineffective in their role were those that hadnt actually had to look for a job for at least 20 years because they had been in the department that long. This doesnt make them bad people, but I felt it defo made it most difficult for them to empathise with their customers.0 -

Why do you people have to get so 'uppity' about things. If you react like this to something as innocuous as an internet post...how are you going to react to nasty customers at JCP?
Go and have a lay-down...listen to a guided meditation CD, and come back full of love.
This is not a love in no but it is about a lot of people, many of them in the same position, trying to support each other through a touch process - I for one need this job and the flexible working time it can give me, which I cannot get anywhere else, and like many other people I have worked my socks off only to have to sit in front of EOs begging them to help me because of an economic situation I have not caused. We are aware that there will be down sides to this job but we are all trying to remain as positive as we can and your comments are not really helping - I have my interview today and like many people will need to keep checking back to get updates on feedback and to check back with people who have been nice enough to say a few kind words, so please leave off will you. I'm nerve racked enough without someone telling me that I 'will' hate this job - people have helped me along the way and I hope to do the same, if it means dealing with negative aspects then hey ho - that is society.0 -
This thread just became incredibly tedious.0

Indeed. Can we take it back to a support and info thread for people who actually want the job?
It's a lot nicer that way.0 -
