  • What do you feel are the appropriate facts that need to be brought up, any figures on flue gases?? I do feel that I need to print something off....
You have been advised about half a dozen times that the only correct line of action is to contact the Gas Safe Register (immediately), and ask for a safety inspection.
Is basic comprehension of plain English not part of your curriculum?

Very patronising. That was not my question if you read it again........ I asked about tomorrow in particular when I go to the meeting. I do plan on phoning the Gas Safe Register as you said, but I would like some facts or whatever that will get them moving, rather than me having to chase people around.

I am a medical student, not a gasman. I am clever enough to realise that boiler emissions aren't simply steam. And, obviously I am not stupid enough to put up with this crap which poses a hazard to my health if left - it is the hall's responsiblity to get the ball rolling, and so that is the whole point of my meeting - to get them to act on this. Yes I can say that I will call the Gas Safe Register, but they need to do something too - they could easily have something fitted to direct these gases away from entering my room, which I will be happy with.
  • Superman, ask them to carry out a background CO check. NO-ONE can say its safe without checking it first, it should be carried out over 15 mins with a flue gas analyzer. If its below 10ppm its considered safe, thats not to say you'll feel safe, but at that very moment its safe for human habitation. If its above that then and only then is it ID. There are lots of smells reported from a boiler flue and most are either unburnt gas from the very start of the lighting process or the combustion chamber heating up.
You could ask to have a plume kit fitted, I dont see any problem with that myself, other than the halls wont want to pay for it.
Ask to see any evidence that the appliance has been serviced regularly and ask for a print out from a flue gas analysis carried out on the offending boiler.
I dont believe anyone on here is patronising you, more getting frustrated that there hasn't been much in the way of feedback from you.
Gas Safe will wipe the floor with the maintenance dept if they found any evidence of poor workmanship and that you weren't taken seriously.
Meanwhile close your window until its sorted.

would have been interesting to see a photograph...

The location may (or may not) comply with regulations.

I believe the location itself does comply with regulations, however that is not my point - these POC should not be entering my room, it does not matter where this flue exhsust is based surely
  • Hi, I'm typing this from my phone so please excuse any bad grammar. just to update everyone that I have had a meeting with the manager of the halls who said they have just had a gas check carried out on the boiler and it is deemed to be "Compliant and safe" as the CO levels are 0.0002ppm (telegan reading for CO/CO2 ratio). I argued they hadn't provided any more reading such as for SO2 and so on, but she was determined it is fine and that it is simply a nuisance, and they cannot pay out for another flue/management kit to be fitted as it is no longer consodered a safety hazard???? I have since been in contact with the Gas Safe Register, and lady told me I need to email a complaint through and they hould then have a look at it.

Presumably the structure of the block is such that other flues are fitted in a similar manner in adjoining property? Is anyone else similarly vexed and/or affected by the effluvia ?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Well at least thats a positive. The last I heard it takes a week for them to come out to carry out the check.
Do everyone a favour and post what Gas Safe find and whether it was easy to do because I think people are under the impression its complicated to do.

The test is totally irrelevant for the situation, and I guarantee you that the reading was not 0.0002 ppm. The performed test is often used for the lgsc, and only proves that the boiler is legal to use.
Poc from a legal boiler that enter the property in sufficient quantities, are still perfectly capable of killing you.
More importantly, a variety of faults that can occur between today and the next test, can send the amount of toxins produced flying up to levels that are several hundred times higher than they are now. This is the main reason that the particular test that has been done, has less meaning than the noon temperature on new year's eve.
I argued they hadn't provided any more reading such as for SO2 and so on, but she was determined it is fine
"She", doesn't have a clue what she is on about, which is exactly par for the course in this kind of situation with this kind of organisation.
The wrong test, the wrong reading, and the wrong interpretation of it; you couldn't make it up.

    ps
Your waffling on about SO2 readings doesn't help much either as it is totally pointless and only serves to divert the attention from the only essential point, which as of yet still has not been addressed at all.
If your approach in medicine will be similar to your approach of this situation, I just prey I will never be in your hands when you work for the NHS, as my chances of survival would be negligible.

As you seem to be in Halls, why not see if there is an empty room somewhere else in the Hall and ask the housing manger to move you there.
