SpiralingDown wrote: »My mum and aunt are llike this. When my mum first got her licence over 10 yrs ago she had only ever been outside Belfast by bus and train so started to panic when thinking about driving anywere.
My DH sat her down and explained about the main routes out of Belfast and how it was a small island and at some point she'd end up back in Belfastor spot a very big sign directing her there :rotfl:
As for going up a few notorious roads, she now goes up both but my Aunt starts to shake and it's very obvious that she's "from the other side" so no one will take her because of the way she acts.
I've worked in both communities and have only had a few small minded people asking what side I belong to but you can spot the ones who'll ask you a mile off because may of them have lived, socialised and never mixed with people outside of the area they live in (a bit like my aunt!!) Thankfully it's getting so much better and there's more being done to integrate both communities.
We've brought our son up to take people as he finds them and he didn't know what religion he was/is, to such an extent that a boy in his class asked all the other boys what religion and race they were because his dad said he could only play with protestants and white people my son said he didn't know.
There were a lot of complaints from parents because the school is a mixed religion and mixed race one, thankfully the kids didn't know what he was on about
In my son's words "his dad's silly, he said he wasn't to play with black people but there are no black people in our school! There's brown, tanned, yellow, pink and some white skinned people but no black skinned one's, how silly is he!" the words of a then 5 year old, so wise.
Sorry went off on a tangent there
Gotta laugh at our wee country eh? When I started my first ever job, there was a woman there who was legendary. The other staff kept asking me if I'd met her yet but to my knowledge I hadn't. The next time she was in our office, they pointed her out. Turns out I had met her on my first day and she'd managed to interrogate me. It was like the 'Empire Laughs Back' sketch (will see if I can find it later):
So what's your name ..... could be Protestant, could be Catholic
What school did you go to ..... could be Protestant, could be Catholic
What university did you go to ..... could be Protestant, could be Catholic
And so the questions went on until she'd twigged 'what' I was!....Banbridge is pretty good but I know what you mean about driving, I hate driving in the city, it scares the carp outta me and I avoid it as much as possible, Rarely go to the centre and take the train if I do, even going to the Oddessy or George Best airport makes me panic:rotfl:
Never tried Stella cidre but Magners and Bulmers are nice, esp on a hot day with plenty of ice:beer:(white lightning :rotfl:those were the days)
I can drive Belfast without an issues even in rush hour traffic which can be pretty hairy. For some reason even though I know I'll find my way back to Belfast somehow, I hate going somewhere I don't know. Maybe when DS2 is a bit older and less likely to scream when hungry I'll take a wee drive down that way.
Oh and for whoever was talking about terrapins .... years ago when the Ninja Turtles were fashionable, me & my bro got 2 terrapins. They were called Bubbles & Squeak. Well Squeak died so we got a new one on Xmas Eve and called it Tiny Tim. Poor dad was the one who had to clean the terrapins, a job neither him nor the animals liked much. Well by this stage, Bubbles was the size of the palm of your hand and big enough to make his feelings known. One evening when dad was carrying Bubbles into the kitchen to clean his shell, Bubbles clamped down onto the fleshy part of dad palm just below the thumb. It took a few whacks off a hard surface to get it to leave go and needless to say they were rehomed shortly afterwards. It's a shame as me & the bro loved racing them up and down our Dukes of Hazzard race track :rotfl:0 -
Please don't talk about religion - or what roads to drive on etc... Every town/city has roads which are good/bad for loads of different reasons, I hate talking about this ! I get that neither you guys are biased and I admire that and can I just say that im not in anyway for many reasons, but reading things on here about ' our wee country 'can remind of the bad times - which are better left back where they belong - in the past !!!!0
