So, you can get anyone to believe anything, not by what you tell them, but by what you don't.

OK, so the organic chicken has less fat, so it has less calories because meat has 4 calories per gram and fat has 9.

But the organic chicken also has 10 x more omega-3, which has 10 calories per gram.

So, weight for weight, you are removing something with 9 calories per gram, and saying it has less calories. But not mentioning you are replacing some, if not all of it with omega-3 which has 10 calories!

But at least the omega-3 is good for you !!
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Personally I find a few butchers in my area are cheaper. One has a bit of a "special offer" at the moment, though really he's been selling them at this price for a few months, 1lb of skinless chicken breast for £2.80. So It's a bit under £6 per kg at the moment. Another often does it where it works out at £7 per kg roughly for us, and to be honest if the butcher and supermarket cost roughly the same, I'd rather get it from the butchers.

Also if you have a Halal butcher their chicken is often cheap, though clearly whether or not you agree with their method of slaughter may impact your choice. In saying that how are chickens generally killed at slaughter houses? Electrocution? I knew but I can't remember now... They must be too small and fragile for a bolt gun..

If i get a chance I go to my local farm shop which on average is £1 or £2 cheaper than the big supermarkets for everything and i generally find butchers in the markets are cheaper than supermarkets. Also which i have found a good one in one of my local Mr A's they have a halal butcher and that is about £2 cheaper than Mr A's own meat's. I only use that halal butcher for chicken though nothing else.
If I make a mistake with something I post I apologize. We are all humans we all make mistakes.

We all make our own choices. I know Halal is cheaper but I would never knowingly buy meat that has been religiously slaughtered in accordance to Islamic principles. I want to save money without sacrificing my moral beliefs.

That wasn't the point, we were talking about the number of calories.

Even so, fat is also good for you too. Problems only occur when you eat more than you burn. Something which is easy to do now we don't work the way we did 100 years ago.

Organic chicken is more expensive, so therefore people can afford less and eat less, and thus consume fewer calories!

I remember watching a prgramme (and I can't remember which now, it was last year sometime, maybe panorama or something similar), which reckoned that most meat is Halal now, because it is easier to do everything the same way rather than have two differing methods of slaughter.

All I can find to back this up:

    http://www.christian.org.uk/news/supermarkets-selling-halal-meat-without-clear-labelling/

anyhoo, you think you pays yer money and takes yer choice, but maybe you don't.

Yes I read about that sometime in 2010 I believe. That's why I said I would never knowingly buy Halal meat as I believe I have probably purchased it without knowing about it. I have read that it is because halal meat is cheaper therefore the supermarkets can make a bigger profit on misleading the public.

I believe it should be labelled as halal meat (majority of halal meat is not labelled at present!) regardless of whether it has been stunned or not pior to slaughter as it is meat that has been religiously slaughtered. I saw a documentary on this issue and even the owners of Halal slaughterhouses featured said it should be labelled! Certain religions for example Sikhism and Hinduism forbid the consumption of Halal meat and many would not buy it if they knew. The deception of the supermarkets doesn't shock me at all anymore.

As supermarkets have customers of many different races, nationalities and religions I find it absurb that the majority are being decieved into buying meat that is slaughtered by the religious views of a minority group.

I think the halal meat issue is a red herring...
The real issue is how badly animal are treated during their short lives, in terrible living conditions.
I'm not convinced halal meat comes from an animal that has suffered much more than the others.
If one only buys meat from animals reared more humanely, then they would be right to expect not to have halal.
But the rest of us who can't afford it would be better off help campaign for better treatment of animals, living conditions as well as slaughtering methods. Focusing on a very narrow issue will only detract from the real problem, and just end up in a 'us' versus 'them' situation, as well as being hypocritical, as if non-muslims treated animals better....
  • Personnally, I buy whole chicken from Aldi, £2.69 for the small one and fillet it. I know it sounds like hard work but if you have the time it is easy, I do a whole chicken, completely skinless, boneless and nasty bit less in about 45 mins. I do it whilst watching the TV.

I would expect to get about 500G of breast and 600g of leg, thigh ect.

just google it, there are videos. All i use are a large tray on my lap, a pair of scissors and a largeish sharp knife. But BE CAREFUL.

    Matt:)

does anyone know the price per kg of chicken breasts at Costco? trying to decide if it is worth the 50 mile round trip ( would buy mince as well)

Just been to Costco. Chicken breasts and mini breast fillets are £6.90 a kilo. We were lucky and managed to get 6 kilos reduced to £5 per kilo! My freezer is going to be full to bursting :-)
