Chicken breasts price comparison

  • Ignoring any previous comments in regards to the morality of meat and getting back on to the topic of chicken breast prices I have always gone for frozen breasts (or occasionally a whole fresh chicken to put in the SC). I've found that the Asda SP frozen breasts state that they're suitable to cook from frozen (although more often or not I'll forget this and defrost them anyway) but they seem to have a bit of a coating on them and although they may be breast meat they seem to be frozen in chunks - this makes them good for things like currys where they'll be added to a sauce, however the Tesco MV breasts are brillaint. They do need to be defrosted but they're a good size and the taste is lovely. My parents tend to be a bit of a snob in regards to food but have actually switched to these instead of cooking a whole chicken for Sunday dinner. I know from previous posts and my own research that water is added to them but I don't actually mind it at all. Water never killed anyone and a big part of eating is psychological, if I see a decent bit of chicken in front of me my mind thinks I've had a decent fill, it won't register that it's been plumped out a bit!

    Hi terra ferma,

It was not my intention to spam. I thought that I was adding another option of places to purchase chicken fillets to those already listed.

I thank you for your comments regarding my website, and will look to address the points you have raised.

I have removed the post and will seek permission to list my link.

    Kind regards,

    Steve.

Great, glad you didn't take offence. :)

I buy all my chicken breasts from halal butchers, I've never paid more than £4.79 / kilo.

I must say that I prefer to pay for the meat rather than the added water, but saying that at least they are upfront, while a lot of meat has water added to through hormones, I believe (when you cook meat that shrinks and produces lots of water, somehow it got in there....).

This is a good thread, I started with 'I'll try frozen ones as they are cheaper' and ended up thinking that I need to pay more attention to the meat I buy. Much healthier to buy better quality, eat less meat and use stuff like lentils and pulses, so you spend the same money and eat more healthily.
(PP made a good point, but pity it was so patronising, nobody here needs lectures, people are trying to feed hungry families, work long hours, make ends meet etc).

Westin Chicken breasts are on their specials this week at £28.80 for 22 which works out at £5.76 per kilo (plus delivery) £3.75 and no I'm not advertising my own website I am just a customer who likes good quality and more importantly good value.

As for animal welfare I stopped buying the 'cheap'chickens when i began to realise that I was removing lots of broken bones from them. My conscience wouldnt let me continue to support the sad life they must have led.

Off to work out what I can afford to order this month, and mustnt forget I've got some 5.00 off a 30.00 spend vouchers.
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!
  • The problem I have is the amount of added water many of these contain. When you cook them, all that water seeps out leaving a smaller piece of meat so it seems a bit like false ecconomy to me to buy the cheaper stuff with lots of added water. Anyone know what the water content is like on the different brands mentioned?
  • I buy the Ocado bags of part-boned chicken breasts for £8.99 for 1.5 kg - that is expensive I know, but they really do taste wonderful and they don't shrink hardly at all when cooked. I was amazed at the difference in taste - even the kids noticed. Plus they are really huge so 2 does 3 of us IYKWIM. They are one of the few things I don't begrudge paying a bit more for.

I get my chicken breasts from the Halal counter at Tesco as they are only £4.50, were £4, per kg.

They are usually very big breasts so I cut them down to use.

They taste wonderful and are cheap. :)

Oh blimey, I DREAD to think how those chickens have been raised to provide meat at £3.98 per Kilo.

I wholly agree with you and tend to steer clear of these types of thread now, however it is worth adding too that an Organic chicken has something like 25% fewer calories than an intensively reared chicken (and 10x more omega 3).

    Hi

I have to be honest and say I don't buy packs of chicken breasts as I think they're too expensive and I can't bring myself to buy cheap chicken.

Personally I prefer to use boneless chicken thighs or turkey breast steaks.
