Where do you get a Linux disk?
  • You can download it from here and then burn http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mint

Id try espressos advice as well

Id also try a network reset:
Goto START and type CMD and run it
    Then enter these 2 commands:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    netsh int ip reset reset.log

See my post #12 :p... All right; if you blinked you'd have missed it!

Anyway, I use Slax in situations like this. You can either burn a boot image to CD or (very quickly and easily) install to a USB stick.

Tried installing Ubuntu and also tried Alienrik's idea too. Both made no difference

What happens if you boot into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING? Still slow?

My bad. If youve tried Ubuntu then im pretty sure safe mode will be no different
So its looking like hardware to me
    Have you disabled IPv6 yet?
Im wondering if the modem is the issue (I have an old Motorola which works fine with Virgin and in 64bit W7 - im wondering if your doesnt?)
Whats your makes and models of modem and router?

Also disabled IPV6 mate, same result. I'm also thinking it's the router/modem. Can't make my mind up whether to upgrade my broadband (you get a different router) or just buy another one

Personally id phone them and tell them youve deduced the router/modem is the issue and as what you have is 'rented' from them then they should replace free of charge anyways

They already replaced this one for me just in case it was faulty, but if I upgrade it's a completely different router/hub thing
