Did you try the master socket ? and have you tried a new microfilter ? And disconnect all other telephones/sky box etc from the phone lines

That's what I'd try next. And see if the speeds improve at 3am when your connection is less likely to be subject to throttling/shaping.

If that doesn't help, maybe you could try booting into a different OS and running a speed test. Something like Slax would do the trick - you can boot into the OS straight off the CD without installing it on your hard drive.

Then you'll hopefully you'll know whether it is the fault of the OS or not...

If you know the IP address of your router (it's often 192.168.1.1 or similar) you could try ping

    ping <ip address> [e.g ping 192.168.1.1]

let us know the response times.

It might be worth varying varying the packet size too , see it if has any effect.

Windows is well instrumented, and you can monitor a lot about the network interface if you need to.

That is strange! The network operates independently from the OS, so the network won't care (or necessarily *know*) what OS is running on attached devices.

Agreed to a point but could this problem not be due to the fact that Win 7 defaults to IPv6 being ON and not all routers support this protocol.

This support article here show how to disable IPv6 which can cause many weird problems.

Easy enough to eliminate this as a possible cause anyway.

  • you're all jumping in too soon.

    as espresso suggested, disable IPv6.

then ping yahoo.co.uk from the command prompt - 'ping yahoo.co.uk'.
compare it to the speed of pinging your router's ip.

Personally I bet both will be very fast suggesting the issue is elsewhere, probably with DNS.

IPv6 no effect , least not on my system, my router doesn't support it, but my switch does. Ping proves nothing, I can ping Xilo 49ms and get 14.55 Mbps, ping Sittingbourne 22ms ping 12.95 Mbps . Alscaff , test using the master socket , check filters, remove phone equipment, post router stats go to BT speed checker and check there http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

Oh and DNS only slows down address resolution (but Virgin's is usually v slow)

Have you tried a different browser?

Which browser and version were you using with your old laptop

Ok, so I tried disabling IPV6 and it made very little to no difference. I have tried both a wired and wireless connection. On my old laptop I used Firefox but on this one Chrome was faster (IE9 is pretty poor) than Firefox

I tried pinging yahoo and the results were on average 67ms

BT Speed tester result was 1.87Mbps

Still can't use Youtube unless I adopt the patience of a saint.

Iam using VirginMedia's Netgear VMDG280 modem/router and again it was fine before but not with this new laptop.

BTW, I appreciate everyone's efforts and comments, this problem is driving me up the wall

Assuming you don't have another router to try, I'd test the speed on the affected laptop using a different OS.

After that, given everything you've tried, I'd expect support from your ISP to help you resolve the problem. They should be able to talk you through some tests to work out what's causing the sluggish speeds.

Personally I wouldn't fiddle around with those settings , IPV6 is turned 'ON' for a reason! , I read somewhere there's stuff going on in the OS that needs it!

You problem is far more likely to be the 'Super-Hub' playing up ... go to the cable forum for more info ... http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/

As esuhl has suggested try a Linux Live disc which can be loaded into RAM at boot (you'll have to go into BIOS and change boot device to CD/DVD rather than HDD). You can then use it to test the hardware without the interference of W7. Doing this makes no changes to your exisiting system but, when you've finished, don't forget to return the boot device back to your HDD.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(
