Windows 7 64 bit terrible connection

Have been hunting for a solution to this for weeks and thought I'd have a look here too.
I bought a HP DV6 laptop running Windows 7 64bit just over a month ago and since then I've been having problems using the internet.
I can load pages as normal but it's slow. I have a 10Mb connection yet it takes about 10mins to load a 5min youtube video and some downloads I just give up on altogether.
I have updated, uninstalled and then re-installed all drivers including my network driver, graphics driver, and have installed both 32bit and 64bit versions of Java.
TBH I'm at a loss now.
My old Windows Vista 32bit laptop used the very same network and ran like a dream until I broke it.
Anyone have some ideas?

have you run the test on speedtest.net ? sounds like a broadband issue rather than a windows issue tbh
you may just be being 'traffic-shaped' by your ISP - this is peak time y'know! :-)Friendly greeting!0 -
Dan this is something that puzzled me too.
I ran a test on there and got weird results.
Test started as normal and shot up to around 9Mb then dropped quickly and the rest of the test took an absolute age. Final results were
Download 0.47Mb/s
Upload 1.00Mb/s
Ping 50ms
very strange0 -
guess you've tried rebooting the modem and re-testing (given the timescales you stated). sounds like traffic-shaping. do you get decent speeds at non-peak times? may want to consider contacting your ISP or changing ISP even... just thoughtsFriendly greeting!0

Try using an ethernet connection rather than wireless. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Try using an ethernet connection rather than wireless.
That's definitely your first step. Then you'll know if it's your Internet connection or the wireless network that's slow.
If it's the wireless connection, you could download InSSIDer, which will scan for local networks and show you which channels they're using (so you can use the channel with the least interference).
If it's the Internet connection, you could try connecting the router to the "test socket" behind the BT master socket.
If that doesn't help it'll probably be your ISP. Does the speed improve if you test it off-peak (at 3am or something)?0 -
I've tried connecting to the router via ethernet cable and it makes no difference. IMO it's got to be something to do with Windows 7 64 bit version. My old Macbook and old laptop running on Vista never had a single problem on this network but I've had hassle with this from the minute I started using it.
I'm with Virginmedia and even though I'm pretty damn sure it's not a problem at their end, they sent me out a new router and it didn't make a single bit of difference.0 -

Apparently not all routers are compatible with Windows 7 64 bit - see here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Im running two hp dv6 laptops, one 32 bit and one 64 bit and the 64 bit loads pages quicker than the 32 bit,so I dont think thats your problem.Do you have another laptop or could a friend bring one round you could try?0

Despite espresso's link ,and the fact that my router is not compatible _pale_ , the problem is unlikely to be Windows 64 bit . Did you try the master socket ? and have you tried a new microfilter ? That is strange! The network operates independently from the OS, so the network won't care (or necessarily *know*) what OS is running on attached devices.
The whole point of TCP/IP is that computers running different, incompatible OSes have a universal language that can be used to communicate with any other device on the Internet.
I can only think that the vendors of the "incompatible" "routers" supply some kind of (presumably un-necessary?) configuration software or supply network interface devices for the PC for which 64-bit Windows drivers are not available...? Or maybe they were just released before Windows 64-bit OSes became mainstream and have been marked as not compatible due to some kind of (incorrect) default labelling.0
