Aaargh Phil!!! Will you stop being so flaming negative about everything!!!! My dissertation actually uses journals and textbooks from over 25 years ago as it is a major work on the evolution of customer buying behaviour!!!!! :wall:

So yes these old journals are of use to me - and costing me a fortune cos I can't get them on-line!!!!

Sometimes you need to know how things used to be, so you can try and predict how they will be - IYSWIM???

And even though I've never turned up drunk - I have missed a lecture due to being paralytic at Xmas - my mates did go - being equally paralytic though!!! And I'm a responsible parent - normally!!!! It's good to do the student thing once in a while and I still get better grades than you:tongue::tongue: You don't always need to put something fresh into an article but sometimes you can look at data in a different way than is conventional!!!

I have not said old stuff is worthless, far from it.

If I did not show a lot of independent thinking in my essays I would get bashed. So that is why I am so surprised that a lot in journals is not original as that would not wash in my own assessments.

For my research project it is expected that I develop my own argument against an article and that is not something I can do by quoting other's articles that much. So it involves me having to think of all the content, rejection of arguments, counter agruments myself.

But they do have new ideas and concepts - that is the point. What journals are you reading that rehash old ideas? In what way are you qualified to critique the work of experts in your field?

But they are not original enough even if they do have slight new ideas. If in my essays you do not show at least 50% independent thinking, new and oringinal ideas there is no chance of getting a good mark. So surely articles must do the same!!

What is the point in a postgraduate degree in arts other than to avoid getting a real job ?

I can understand postgrad and masters for research esp medical but not arty stuff its a waste of taxpayers money in my opinion.

So you never read a book, watch television, watch a film, go to a play?

So you think that the arts should be an elitist passtime for the rich?

The industry I am going into is much harder than "a real (braindead) job" (which I did for 7 years (to pay for my course), and frankly, it was a great waste of a great talent.

It is not an easy route at all, and something someone has worked for all their life, which I have.

I pity people as short sighted as you.

Arts Do benefit society, they make our lives richer, less plain, have started major empowerment and change in countries (eg Augusto Boal in South America).

But who says they are not original enough? You? In which way are you qualified to say? You aren't answering me, not giving examples of work that isn't original.

To compare two articles does not seem original on the grounds that I as only an UG are expected to write highly original pieces but yet for an article people who are better qualified than an UG get paid just to compare and constrast two articles.

So what I do not get is why we have to write original ideas and yet professions can just compare.

Do you see what I mean?

But your 'original ideas' draw on the theories and work of others. You are expected to draw on existing work and knowledge in your field, just as academics are. Professionals don't just compare the work of others, they base their work on that of others; taking ideas further and testing the same ideas in different situations.

Yes, I see that, sometimes articles could do with a bit more "taking ideas further and testing the same ideas in different situations" rather than just writing a summary of what has come before.

As a student you have to develop your ideas and you would get heavly marked down for just drawing on existing writing.

Are you talking about systematic reviews? ... you probably don't even know

Perhaps you should take a look at the author guidelines for peer reviewed journals with a high impact factor, if you know what that means.

My publications are all based on original research, they wouldn't have been accepted otherwise - and even with that criteria, the standard of work must be top rate.

Maybe I go about it the wrong way but I spend hours for weeks before my essays are due thinking up my theory and then how to defend it from objections but that is what we are expected to do.

I see all that, but maybe I am wrong to expect stuff in journals to jump off the page at me and to say something really new and unheard of. A lot of journal articles just seem to be like the ones in the standard text.

I probably do have too high hopes for journals that is all.

I am not saying they are not really good work, but they just do not make me go "woW" and published work surely should.
