  • I made my cake with the gram measures given online and it went horribly wrong haha! D:

I think tomorrow I'm going to purchase myself a Tala cook's measure - as it has US cups measured on the inside :)

From now on, I don't think I'm going to trust the internet with is measurement sites anymore - they lieeeeee! :( haha

    Hi YWG:D

Sorry to hear it all went a bit wrong, you poor thing! I bought set of US cups off ebay for about £3 and they are invaluable!

When i had my breadmaker, it converted cups to grams - i just looked up the instructions online and found the page - as it goes through specific ingredients... If you open this PDF, and go to page 20, you can see if that would be any help to you

Actually, looking at the cups thread it seems to list a similar thing :) Hope it helps you in the meantime.

I've merged your thread so you can see the information listed and we can keep it together to help future users:D

I got a set of stainless steel measuring cups from Sainsburys for about £3.99. I absolutely hate cup measurements, I think it's terribly inaccurate not to mention messy, but it's definitely easier to just use the cups than to try and convert everything to weights.

I agree with Angeltreats -it is easier to use cup measures if that's how your recipe is written. I've posted before (probably on this thread) about amking a cup measure from a large yogurt pot.

I don't find them difficult to use or messy but that's probably because I keep my dry baking ingredients in large tubs in which I can easily dip the cup.

    Hi all

Am finally going to try this recipe for my ribs tomorrow

    SERVES 1
    Change to: Servings US Metric

    Ingredients

    1 tablespoon onion powder
    1 tablespoon garlic powder
    1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
    1 cup pineapple juice
    1/2 cup whiskey (favorite brand)
    2 cups brown sugar
    2 beef bouillon cubes
    4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    Directions

    1

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow to cool and use as a sauce on a grilled meat.

and have just checked and 2 cups of sugar convert to 360g is this right?

I know the original poster said that it was a lot of sugar but I just wanted to check?

It depends if the cups of brown sugar are loose or packed

It does seem like a lot of sugar, given the liquid amounts also given - are the stock cubes dissolved in this too?

Having said that, it looks like being a really thick, sticky coating which will be good on ribs. I often use American recipes for BBQ sauces and the like, and I've never had a bad one.

As FLoyd said, it also depends on whether the cups of sugar are packed or loose - if you're worried about the amount of sugar, then just use loose cups of sugar.

Also, don't worry about converting cups into metric - just use the same cup for everything - a cup is a cup is a cup, and is the beauty of American cooking!
  • Hi,

Just a quick question but I am looking at a recipe and is says to use a cup of liquid in the ingredients. So how big is a cup?

    Thanks.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.
  • Yep, 250 ml
