Most American recipes use cups, not weights. I use quite of lot of US recipes and it does get a bit less weird after a while

Please could someone inform me what weights equate to American Cups?
I have downloaded a chart but it seems to be different for liquids and dry food stuffs? I have found some wonderful recipes that I want to try. The MSE bit is that I dont want to have to buy the cups x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Things weigh differently based on whether they are solid or liquid so your chart is probably right.

A set of cups isn't expensive...
  • I got my set in TK Maxx - worth a look as they turn up there sometimes - or Ebay?

it is different for liquids and dry foods and also different foodstuffs seem to have different quantities.

    1lb butter = 2 cups
    1lb flour = 4 cups
    1lb sugar = 2 cups
    1lb icing sugar = 3.5 cups
    1lb brown sugar = 2 cups
    12 oz syrup = 1 cup
    14 oz rice = 2 cups
    1lb dried fruit = 3 cups
    2 oz breadcrumbs = 1 cup
    4 oz grated cheese = 1 cup
    4 oz chopped nuts = 1 cup

quarter pint water = 2/3 cup
    half pint = 1 1/4 cup
    1 pint = 2 1/2 cups

    Hope that helps

If you have a container that has mls -
1/2 cup = 125ml and work from there.

I US cup is 240 ml straight off my american cup measures from Lakeland ( technically it is 236.59 ml!). You could measure and cut milk bottles and yoghurt pots to the various measures. NB UK cups are not the same as US cups.
  • The pound shop sells sets of very lurid neon coloured cups for £1. Worth a look.

My pyrex type glass jugs have cup measures on them as well as pints and ml's, might be worthwhile checking yours too.
