:)Morning All
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone have any advice on when you stop would stop giving birthday/xmas presents to nephews & nieces? I'm sure when we were children we stopped getting presents when we reached 16, what does anyone think?
Thanks

I think everyone is different and it also depends how close you are to people. My family are all different, on my Dad's side of the family he is one of 8 and there are 21 neices and nephews so the rule was once they turned 18 they stopped getting presents. However as almost all of them now have children (and some of them children) there is an 'informal' rule that we buy for whose children we want to. On my mum's side of the family she only has 1 brother and 2 newphews, everyone's grown up and we all still buy for each other because we are very close. On my husbands side of the family again they are also different....his mums side is the same as my mums side and his dads side only buy for neices and nephews when they see each other. DH and I have a baby girl and so far no nieces and nephews, he and I have one sister each so I think we'll always buy presents for neices/nephews if/when we have them.
I guess it's whatever works best in your family.Don't Throw Food Away Challenge January 2012 - £0.17 / £10
Grocery Challenge 16th Jan - 19th Feb 2012 - £254.72/£200 (Ooops very bad start)
Grocery Challenge 20th Feb - 8th March 2012 - £0/£2000 -
Personally I feel that it's when they turn 18 or stop appreciating them, whichever comes first. My nephew is 13 and rapidly approaching the latter. :eek:0

At the beginning of 2011 we decided to stop buying for over 18's, except for big birthdays like 21st, 40th etc. as we have a hugh family on both sides with loads of neices and nephews, brothers, sisters, brotherin laws, sister in laws etc and both my parents have re-married so it was really too expensive and we were fed up of struggling with money beacuse of it. We let everyone know by explaining the situation. Most people were fine and understanding but a couple were 'funny' with us and stopped buying for our two dd's even though we had bought for their children all their lives (and money defintaely wasn't a problem for them)....we came to the conclusion that this said more about them than us and just chose to ignore it.
So if you do stop buying for over 18's be prepared as not everyone is understanding as they should be0 -
hubby and I stopped getting we we had kids as aunts and uncles then bought for the kids insteadPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

We just got out of the habit of sending presents to the other kids in the family mostly out of financial neccessity. In most cases we only ever really bought selection boxes.
Also, as my daughter is now 18 she gets birthday and Christmas presents to the value of £20/30 a year as she is an adult. She understands why and is happy with it (or so she says)

Myself and siblings agreed to stop at 18 for birthdays. I also decided to move to "family" gifts after that point for Christmas too. When one niece complained to her mother about this, mum pointed out that the girl had never, ever bought me an individual gift!"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

Still give to one of my nieces (29 and only a token item) but the other niece has kids so they get the presents now and not the niece. That's the way our family has always worked - end of the chain gets the pressiesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
