Stray found - best way to rehome???

Hi all
my sister was been given a stray found locally it was in a very bad way, exhausted, very hungry, very smelly. She took it in and has it for 4 days now it is doing well and is eating loads.
It is a greyhound cross staffi (80% greyhound 20% staff). My sister has called her biscult and says she is great with the other dogs, people and children and walks fine on the lead.
She is trying to rehome her as she has already has 4 rescue greyhounds and has no room for another. She has tried a couple of local rescue places but they will not take her as my sister has had ner for more than 4 days!!
She lives in Essex near Stapleford Abbots golf club.
Any ideas please.

By the very breed, I would say it has been "lost on purpose" - hope I'm wrong - you could try the things that Caro100 has done in her posts on here.

Yes, she is definately not a lost pet but has been chucked out. My sister said she is a super girl though and very loving and friendly. She is smaller than a greyhound, about knee high, but has the greyhound body with a more chubby face.0

Blinkin' heck - it obviously pays to lie!! I understand that they don't want to encourage people just giving up their own pets, but it seems a bit harsh to limit it to 4 days.0

Thats what I thought, the otherone wouldn't take her because the road she was found in wasn't in their area.
I assume they are all full up with christmas cast outs. All they suggested was the RSPCA, but my sister will no go down this route as she has been told they put them to sleep if they can't find a home within a specific time frame.0 -

Has the local authority dog warden been contacted? Has the dog been checked for an ID chip?
The dog warden should be able to advise where they usually take their strays too, it may be a shelter with a no-kill policy so Biscuit can be given to the DW and then taken there for rehoming. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

By law a stray dog needs to serve 7 days at the pound (then becomes the council's "property" to rehome) or 28 days in the finder's care with the DW's approval.
I would suggest your sister contacts the DW, this doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence for the dog, she could always contact rescues to try to find the dog a rescue space
Being scanned for a chip is a good idea - even if the dog has been dumped, there's the possibility it could be a stolen dog that's got too "hot" to keep hold of (or the possibility of a ransom fee/making profit has gone cold) and the dog's been dumped by a thief, and it has a living owner desperately trying to find it.0 -
Please contact :
info@animallifelineuk.org
They have contact with rescues all over thge country and are normally able to help when nobody else can.. in securing a rescue space.

thankyou for all your advice. I have looked on the lost dog website but have found nothing. I will tell her to call the DW and contact animal lifeline0

If she's knee-high, she sounds more like a whippet. If she is a greyhound though, you could try the Greyhound Trust. As others have mentioned though, strays are the local Council's responsibility (sometimes through a Dog Warden, sometimes not), and so many local shelters won't take them.
Good luck.0
