thinking of studding out my yorkie

I was turned down by a certain breed rescue because I wanted a female not a dog and was told no they do not rehome a female if there is already one there, they would only give me a dog. I really fail to find reason with this as I had two female german shepherds for over 10 years with not one bit of trouble they were incredibly close, too close infact0

I agree that there's no point homing to somebody without the finances, just because they're at home all day. However lots of rescues DO rehome to people who work, and who live in flats. It just depends on the dog. Obviously a puppy who needs 4 meals a day and house training would be no good, but an older less active dog could be fine.
I lived in a flat (ground floor with small garden) and worked full-time when I adopted my dog via a rescue. A lot of rescues (especially the smaller ones) are quite flexible as long as your home is right for the individual dog. Although I worked full time I made arrangements so the dog was never left for more than about 4hrs either by using a dog walker or popping home at lunch time. Unfortunately my dog passed away last year, but he had a very happy 7 years with us (he was about 4 when I got him). I think reputable breeders have their place, but I think obtaining dogs via gumtree or similar is asking for trouble. Yes, you may be lucky and it all works out fine. But, if it all goes wrong how many people on gumtree will take the animal back, or help with behavioural advice?
All good BUT - people who wants dogs (especially dogs) do have certain dog types in mind.
I could have a staff. I did not want a staff.
I am a GS person through and through and a rescue offering me any other dog just will not cut, sorry.
I wanted a GS and so I got a GS... end of - for me.
I really do not find it reasonable rescues trying to "push" dogs that are unsuitable from prospective new owner's point of view not just what rescue think about particular dog being suitable for particular home but also oteher way round.
And actually yes, I did have a dog walker while I was working, as I was working - I could afford one, every single day. Additionally - I may live in a flat BUT I have massive and I mean MASSIVE open green literay across the road and massive and again MASSIVE woods at the back - with ponds etc. Both ideal for off lead walks etc etc.... And this is where my poor GS (poor - living in a flat) spends at least 3 hours per day every single day rain or shine. Not left to her own in a garden but with other dogs/people etc.
Rant over :A0 -
Do all shelters/rescues neuter or insist on neutering before an animal is rehomed?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0

I bought my dog via gumtree - why on earth would I expect the seller to take her back or help with behavioural advice?
From the moment I put a lead on Zara she was/is my responsibility - forever, no matter what.
And believe me, it was/is tough at times especially while I am out of work BUT all my lot are still insured, vaccinated on time, all are neutered, fed well and... sometimes, just sometimes they move to give me some space on the bed
As Paddypas said earlier - this is a general discussion, absolutely not having a go at anyone at all personally... Everyone is entiled to their own point of view and I am just stationg mine. Some may agree some may not - it is irrelevant.
The fact stays that I have bought all my lot via Gumtree and all my lot are staying here as long as they live.
I had to rehome one of my cats but that was for the cat's own good and I made sure she went to the best possible home (via gumtree too - surprise surprise), she is absolutely happy there as a single little princess with 2 human slaves. But that was only because she tottaly hated the dog after coming back to me 3 years after I split up with my ex.. I have tried to keep her, months I was hoping she will et used to Zara but at the end had to do what was the best for Chloe... That was an exeptional situation though.0 -

I think it can be short sighted to be so stuck on a particular dog, or even a particular breed though, I'd love a Hungarian Puli, or an Airedale Terrier, but I wouldn't be the right home for either of those breeds right now and it would be wrong for me to get them for my own selfish reasons.
I'm not saying you aren't a suitable GSD owner, just that I'm sure you could love another breed as much as a GSD (they're all dogs after all, and all dogs are pretty great!) and saying "I wanted, I got, end of" does sound like putting your wants above the dog's wellbeing. Its not as simple as 'end of'!0 -

Mostly, unless there is a medical reason not to or the animal is too young.
I know you've got a weird anti-neutering thing going on but maybe if you were the one dealing with the consequences of uncontrolled excessive pet breeding you'd be able to see their side a bit more clearly.0 -
saying that a flat and working aren't good conditions for a dog (or pet) is the problem so many people have with rescues. It should ONLY be based on the individual situation. Both of the person and the animal. A generalisation isn't helpful.
A flat - no mention of which floor, is there a lift or stairs, how large is it?
Working - from home, from an office, down the road, a million miles away, would they get a walker in if necessary?
SOOOOOOO many different scenarios from just two lines, not to mention no understanding of size or type of dog.
Jo-Jo that is outrageous for a kitten, even a pedigree kitten from rescue.
However, in answer to the OP I suggest castration rather than breeding. We all think *ours* have the best temperament, but in reality that's not enough.0 -

Weird? Different perhaps.
I just wanted to know the general policy when it comes to rehoming as I work my way through this threadAlways try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Trust me, I've met GR's mob. That dog landed firmly on all four paws when she was taken in by GR. Well adjusted, excellent temperament - the pair of them are ideally suited!
I don't think all dogs are the same. If they were, there wouldn't be so many different breeds. I don't feel much inclination towards the more mutated/distinctively reshaped breeds. I pity them their reduced lifespans, deaths in whelping, squished brains, eye problems and infected skin folds, but I'd never want one in a million years. But a three legged, one eyed and slightly mangy dark coloured mutt that looks essentially canine, is smart enough to realise the cats aren't portable snacks and could answer to the name of Elwood (don't ask ), no problem.
Do you think that it is better to home an animal of a breed that you absolutely adore, know a lot about, have had experience of in the past and know the quirks, foibles and outright faults of, but still love them -
or do you think it is worth risking an adoption breaking down because the person might grow to love the animal they are less experienced at reading body language of, that they never liked the look or temperament of even in the best of the breed and really, is making do with because someone else has said they will get used it to it in the end? And if they don't like the idea of this arranged marriage, that they weren't really an animal lover in the first place?
I think the first option is better. I understand that rescues want to be involved in the choice, but sooner or later, they end up chock full of dogs, cats and other animals that could have spent their lives in much better places had they not always demanded a big house with particular fencing, a woman/man always working from home who doesn't have children or intend having them, has plenty of upfront cash to buy the animal (even if it is portrayed as a donation for costs incurred, it's still the price in a economics sense), no roads, prepared to accept anything offered her and has no opinions on animal care that differ in the slightest from the person they are speaking to.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
