I'd work my lunch breaks and tea breaks the week after I had to take time off as a gesture.

    OR I'd find another job;

OR I'd try ands come to an arrangement where you have 10 or so unpaid holiday days in your contract; you lose a little money, but you have days if you need them, and if you don't need them, you have holiday time.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

Yes i get paid for it

and Liney read my post i do finish at 1 on a friday, but hospitals ear doctors dont work friday afternoons...

Alot of hospitals wont work around your jobs....

Offer to do a number of them hours unpaid to make up for the time off you need?

Honestly it's not your employers problem that you have a sick child or that you are a single parent and you can't seem to be able to see that.

With my HR hat on, honestly, if you had 10 instances last year, I'd be chastising your previous supervisor for being too lax. The new guy may be a little OTT but the question is 'are you able to fulfil the terms of your contract.' How you do that should not be his concern.

Are you prepared to offer any flexibility, of do you want all the wages and not to work all the days? Because in a business sense, that is what it comes down to.

I would be checking if the company has an attendnace or absence management procedure now, in case you trigger warnings under it, to keep yourself right! I know that isn't what you want to hear, but I'd check it out so at least you know what you may be dealing with in the future if he takes a hard line.

You could speak to the next manager, but you run the risk of making things even worse. They could insist that you do the job as per contract.

Are you making up these hours you are taking off?

It isnt reasonable to ask for time off during working hours and ask to be paid for it too.

Like cruella and emmzi said, the least you could do is make up the hours you take off.

I don't think it is standard though. He was told by his new head (after all the problems) that he could have a day off if needed. My employers would allow 1 day as carers leave (but resented it) and the rest as holidays, he however as you know gets no holidays other than school ones so can't use them. He certainly wouldn't get a week and a half off so I think you must have a very understanding head.

The week and a half was exceptional. I had put a lot of extra unpaid hours in over the past year and I think this was recognised and appreciated. Getting odd days of should be no problem though, there is provision in the teaching contract for these.
  • i dont get paid for hours i take off....

  • Do you get paid for the 10 hours overtime you do?
  • Yes if i do it.

    which i do every week.

if they wanted me to make the hours up using my overtime i would do it.
