Can I cancel my British Gas contract?

Hi

I signed up over the phone for a British Gas dual fuel contract till 2014. in Dec 11..I was sent post that gave me 7 days cooling off but due to family illness, this date has long since passed. I am due to have my supply taken over on 11/1 (Gas) and 20/1(Elec) and have changed my mind about going over to BG. Do I have any rights in wanting to cancel? All advice gratefully received.

thanks

Jan

I'm not sure (probably not if you've agreed a minimum contractual period), but with my fix with Scottish Power I can leave at any time... it just costs about £70. Not sure if that's worth looking into.

Have you checked the T&Cs that you signed up to or looked for them on the British Gas site?

I believe their contracts allow you to cancel penalty-free if they raise their prices...

Not an immediate solution however. And I believe they can also freeze the price changes and therefore restore the original contract and keep you locked in. Could be wrong though on this one though....

There will be a cancellation fee to pay, after which you will be free to choose an alternative supplier.

    Hi,

I'll move your query across to our utilities board where the experts there will be able to help you.

    Good luck :)

If you look on their website (http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/energy.html) it says £50 per fuel to cancel.

£50 each fuel so if dual a total of £100 considering it is on of the dearest products on the market you would only be charged about 3-4 weeks gas and elec cost based on mtr reads plus the £100 canx charge might be best to bite the bullet pay it and get on a way cheaper deal elsewhere. Of 91 different tariffs across 14 power companies the Bg Fixed rate April 2014 is 80th result so there are 79 tariffs cheaper than what you have opted for, the cheapest fix is until april 2013 (31-3-13) with Scottish Power, the unit rates are 19% cheaper than the bg fixed tariff.

Did the op say which tarriff they signed up to?, I can't seem to see it. Everytime I get a phone call from another provider and tell them I'm on bg websaver 11 they just say 'ok, we can't beat that'.
