Right my friends major things are afoot in the TallGirl Household, had a conference call yesterday at 11am to say my current job is being made redundant together with 4 of my colleagues. There are basically 4 new jobs you can apply for same salary but 1 full day a week at HQ (200 miles away) and do 2 other areas from what I do now. If I don't apply they might find me another job at HQ (no use) or voluntary redundancy.

Shock and horror went through my mind remember I had a 5 year plan. Not sure what to do yet got until next Friday. Asked how much the redundancy will be but they have not got back to me yet.

Away on business at the moment so unable to really think straight. Lots of things to think about so will no doubt have to use this to put my thoughts down. So bloody glad we are mortgage free that is for sure.

Indeed being Mortgage free must be at least some of the worry off your head?

I went to see a former colleague (also turned writer) who paid off her mortgage while contracting so the financial hit now she earns pennies is a lot less.

I am so relieved that a health kick ties in nicely with wanting to throw any spare cash at the mortgage... some of my house bricks are getting coloured in... which is progress I guess!

Know it must be a worrying time work wise, but I am sure you will end up with an even bigger and better 5 year plan!

  • Will stop lurkin for a while and say hi! I love reading what you are doing and the pics of the garden. (Please come and design mine..lol)
I took redundancy 3 years ago after 20 years as a civil servant - it was the best thing I ever did. My mortgage took a big lump sum and I managed to take the kids (30,26,22 & 12) to Disney!
I now have a job I love and wouldn't change anything.
    Hope all works out.

Nothing more to add except that you have put yourself in a great situation to deal with any outcome.

Thank you so much for your comments much appreciated also from the lurkers lovely to meet you.

As those who regularly read my diary I am not in love wit my job in my 7th year of being on the road and it looses its gloss a bit even if I did have all the trimmings nice sallery, company car etc something no one else has in my field. BUT money isn't everything I absolutely loved my previous job due to the people who worked there but I haven't got that at my current job. I so miss having colleagues and seeing people everyday in an office setting. I also feel the company I work for has lost direction a bit and is owing towards stuff I don't want anything to do within an I cannot wholeheartedly stand behind. So if I took this new role (if I even get it) then they will know I am not 100% committed and how can you "sell" something you don't believe in.

Spoke to DH tonight, he is a bit scared about me leaving but I have got money saved and with a bit of luck I can get a nice package from them and won't have to leave straight away. My new plan (which I will mull over in my greenhouse - forgot to ask DH if it has been delivered by the way ) would be as follows:
-Hopefully work as normal until early April
-Then get redundancy of 6 months in next tax year
-Hand back car, phone etc and buy 2nd hand small car Polo or something.
-Sign up for professional qualification (takes 3 months very part time)
-Volunteer in my field at a place where there is chances of jobs even if part time, need to refresh some parts of my skill set. Also use all the contacts I have to put the word out I am looking for work.
-Work for DH maybe 3 days a week

Will be very tough to get a new job and I will have to take a payout of at least £10 if not £15k (plus car, free petrol anc phone, broadband) and that's if I find full time work. I am only 43 this year so cannot think of retirement yet.

Alternative which is pretty much ruled out is I take a job at HQ (I actually quite fancy one new one) pay cut of £7-£8k and loss of car and live there during the week. I don't think that is economically viable unless work pays for accommodation.

Waiting for HR to send me the figures but guessing that have not even started looking at them as they are rubbish. Work must have considered someone will take the option as there are only 4 new jobs for 5 people.

If I go the other 4 people will be nicely spaces out from HQ so can work from office 1 day a week no problem. That's why I know they are happy for me to go.

Want to leave on the best of terms and I wouldn't do anything to harm them. Mind you if a competitors knocked on door I could be back on the road with a salary to match. Still for now I should get some sleep got 3 meetings tomorrow then a long drive home.

Again thanks for all your support georgesmums good to know you are happier now in the new job is it better paid, the same or are you just happy with the changes. Hurdler your colleague sounds like she has got it sussed and well done on the colouring of the bricks I never did That but I know many that does. Catshark and GallyGirl I won't make any rash decisions but not having a mortgage means I don't have to worry about applying for that job I don't want and I could get pushed out off in a few months time when I fail to perform in it.

Tonight I am in the home of Faulty Towers.

  • Hi Tallgirl, yes the new job is better paid, a little further away. I know have to travel about 40 mins each way but have travelled further in the past.
I am older than you (turned 50 in November) and DH had a bad accident 8 years ago so doesn't have a job. On saying that, he does have his own business as due to injuries and over 200 job applications nobody wanted him, lol!!
Although the business is now ticking along nicely he doesn't make much (but he doesn't cost much either)!!
We have a more pleasant way of life now.
I look on it as a new chapter in my book of life...

Sounds like you have a great plan put in place already TG. All your hard work over the years has paid off. Even if worse off, sounds like you will have a much better quality of life. Solo travelling in hotels is no fun. And with DH hopefully less stressed if he sells business then things looking up all round in the TG household :j.

Thanks Georgesmum well done for getting that job and loving it, I don't think 40min travel is that bad I shall be looking up to that range.

GallyGirl yes it sounds like a plan but still need to know how much they will offer me hopefully will know today.

Had a bad nights sleep, tossed and turned, finally slept but then had two dreams.

One I got into a car that wasn't DH's he was up ahead, he didn't stop for me to get in so I drove off with these strangers. They kindly took me to the top of my old childhood homes road and dropped me off. I lost my Blackberry in their car but got it back turned out they lived not far from my mum.

Second bit I am in the office at HQ waiting for HR to tell me how much redundancy I will get. She is about to print out the letter when the printer prints banknotes instead. They get stuck in the printer and are ruined (all bundled up) so she has to go away and I wait again. Speak to current boss a bit and finally get the letter it's £50k

Strange those two dreams, I will loose my phone when I leave and won't have my car either. The second one I sadly won't get £50k shame really.

First one sounds to me like you and DH are having separate journeys work wise - both changing and he is a bit further down the road than you maybe? What does a Blackberry represent to you? Status? Pressure? Power? Or simply a way to communicate? Sounds like you're acknowledging you might need a bit of help with regaining what it means. The strangers aren't strangers. Describe them as if you were explaining to someone else - physical and personality wise. Now do any of them seem familiar? Childhood home probably means security - they'll help you get there - and living not far from your mum...... dk, maybe the security thing again or maybe something about them or the security that reminds you of her?

Second one probably just frustration at having to wait for amount. Pretty obvious symbolism of printing money :D. And a bit of wishful thinking at the end!

Am sure you didn't want them analysed but I'm fascinated by dreams and what they tell us .
