Angel’s Flight from the Kingdom of Debt – The Take Off

  • Greetings Angelettes,

After another very sluggish week trying to kill off the lurgy – I’m starting to feel a little more human … the sniffly sneezy bit has gone, and I don’t feel quite so much like a dodo bird (though I’m not yet at the jitterbug stage!). I still have the horrid chesty cough (keeping everything crossed that I seem to have escaped the dreaded “B” ) & my get up & go hasn’t quite caught back up with me … but it’s enough so I can swing back into the pilot seat.

So .. we’ve done more than enough taxiing on the tarmac … I’m now impatient to be off … so hang the non essential pre-checks … we’re going to take off on a wing and a prayer instead (que Bon Jovi .. living on a prayer) … :rotfl:

  • Been busy dealing with offline stuff, some rewarding some not so

However, I have a confession to make ... and I am so embarrassed :o Some of you may have noticed one of the recent MSE News posts about Hidden Online Subscriptions ... I was almost caught out with this. :(

Well, actually ... I was caught out with it initially, but luckily discovered the problem within a couple of hours (cant believe there's even a thread on MSE about them that I missed :() and immediately sent a cancellation email (on a sunday evening) followed by a visit to my bank the next day.

Luckily the Bank were very good and blocked the company (minus the small delivery charges already taken) and to my relief the following day I also had email confirmation from the company that everything was cancelled. Having kept an eye on my account this week ... nothing else has been taken :T A very very lucky escape !

One of the drains has blocked itself again, really badly this time (shudders) and I'm going to need to get the drain people out again .. I really need to get Mr GA to understand he cant keep putting gunk down it.

Now that I've got that little lot off my chest ... I need to do some figure jiggling with recent developments, so I can do a positive Money update :)

    Back soon ...

  • Hello again Angelettes ....

Welcome Urg, lovely to have you aboard :pAnd Oldtractor for dropping in to say hello :)

I've been wrangling for a while now with the old Mortgage company re the Negative Equity (since I got their final bill). They couldnt find one of my big payments (clearing off arrears on the account). When everything came out of storage - I located, copied & supplied them with the details of the two payments (the biggie & a smaller one). Still wouldn't accept it was their error and would not adjust the amount owed. This has carried on for a few months now. :wall:

On Saturday, I got a letter from their solicitors demanding I send in an SOA so they could determine a monthly repayment schedule unless I was willing/able to pay the whole balance immediately - though they did also say that they would be open to a "reasonable" full & final by negotiation.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ...... The BIG news of the day .....

Just as I was about to start spurting smoke from the ears & work myself up to type a blistering reply to them ..... I noticed the Balance amount - it's changed .... By a staggering £9,060 .... DOWNWARDS

Reading further down .. explains the finding of the missing funds (deducted) ... the associated charges (deducted) ... the full accrued interest on the account (deducted) ..... 3 months overpayments - not calculated at the time as only done yearly (deducted) .... a goodwill gesture by them for the inconvenience (deducted) and an clerical error from the sale figure (rectified & deducted)

I am gobsmacked - what was a £10K debt that would have sat on my credit file for many years to come whilst paying off, then for another 6+ years to drop off .... is now down to a £940 balance owed ... maybe less if a full & final is successfully negotiated. :j
Suffice say .... I don't think I've ever been so happy to receive a Solicitors debt letter in my life :rotfl:

I've updated the figures in Post #2 ... but I've quoted the relevant bits below for ease - Total owed balance also includes £70 debt payments made so far this month.
    Quick Summary
Debts to repay (the 1st figure is the original debt / 2nd is £ repaid so far / the 3rd is balance owed

    MTGE : 130,000 / 0.00 / 130,000
    Neg Equity : 10,000 / 9,060 / 940
    Sub Total Mtges : 140,000 / 9,060 / 130,940

    Total Owed : 163,200 / 13,009 / 150,191

I am so relieved, as this was the debt I was most agitated about. Just need to think of how I can raise the money to pay any F&Final that may be offered to me.

OMG GA! does that mean you only owe £940 or less if you can negotiate a settlement?

was going to say, if they still do not take your paperwork seriously contact the Ombudsman!

    Yes it does Aesop ...

£940 as it stands, but they've indicated they are open to negotiation on a realistic settlement offer :T

That's one great letter! What a difference that will make to you.

Good luck finding the cash for the F+ F. Have you got any ideas?
  • Haven't got the foggiest Urg ... :o

Think it will really depend on the amount they'd agree to & how long they'd allow for the payment to be made. If they gave me say a month / 6 weeks to make the F&F -then it might be possible depending on the amount ...

If it had to be paid then & there / within days ... then short of them agreeing a stupidly low amount like £200 ... it just wouldnt be doable at all. I'll have to get the paperwork together, look at options I have, do some sums & then "speak" to them to see what kind of figure they have in mind.

Right, a few things to do before bed, and an early work start in the morning so time to tuck the pc up for the night :rotfl:

Have a good day tomorrow everyone :A

WOW well done on persisting with them ref the negative equity. That is an AWESOME reduction. :T:T

Ref the drain. Can you still get Washing Soda Crystals in the UK. If you can get a jug and put two cups of the crystals and 2 cups of boiling water in the jug. mix until dissolved. then pour that down the drain. Might help.
