  • Thanks Marta, she feeds well luckily and I've got loads of milk which is why I always think she can't need feeding, feed and and change her at 2 then at 3 she would probably have another feed and change then at 4 probsbly have another feed and change. is that normal though? She only feeds about 3-4 hours in the day. Maybe she is hungry? Think we will try more feeds tonight ! Thanks for the tips on the bath too x!

Idk, I keep a diary with every feed/nappy change because we're still monitoring her weight gain. Yesterday's diary from 1p.m. to today, day 17:

    -
    1:30 pm - 2 oz, slept 2h
    3:45 pm - 1.5 oz, slept 1h 45min
    5:30 pm - 1.5 oz, no sleep
    6:00 pm - 1.5 oz, slept 30 min
    7:00 pm - 0.5 oz, slept 30 min
    8:00 pm - 2.5 oz, slept 4h
    0:00 pm - 3 oz, slept 4h
    4:15 am - 2.25 oz, slept 2h 45 min
    7:00 am - 1.5 oz, slept 3h
    10:00 am - 3 oz, slept 2h
12:00 am - 3 oz, slept 3h but woke up at 1pm for 0.5 oz
    3:00 pm - 2 oz, slept 1h 45 min
    4:45 pm - 1 oz, still sleeping.

The less she eats, the sooner she wakes up.
Even if you have a lot of milk, she might get tired when sucking and falling sleep in the middle before getting satisfied. I would suggest trying to feed her first every time she's unsettked, even though you might think she's full. She might be going through one of those growth spurts. I was surprised at how much this lo could eat, she's gone from eating 12oz on day 6, 16.5 oz on day 10, to 22.75 oz on day 16!! And she still needs to increase it a bit!!

I hope you get more sleep tonight!!

    Hi Moneypenny! Congrats!

TBH, it is all a bit trial and error in the early days, but generally its a question of rotating through the options until you hit what they are after, then start again! Hungry, dirty bum, scared/want comfort/ tired. It may seem impossible that they want to feed so often, or so long, but it so often is hunger esp with BF as their tummies are so small still and BM is burned up quite quickly! If in doubt, whip the Boobie out!! Generally i fed at least every 3 hours for the first weeks, sometimes every two, often for 45mins each. She often had a cluster feed of 2-3 feeds of upto an hour each from 3pm too. The early days have loads of growth spurts too, which help boost your supply. Dont forget to offer both boobs.

It may also not help with the awake at night, that they just have no concept of night and day. So anything you can do to differentiate for her, helps. I would also suggest drinking a mug of camomile tea(make sure its pure leaves) around 4pm, and another about 45mins/1hr before you would like her to sleep in the evening. Gives it time to get into your system and milk. My HV suggested it as my LO was a terrible sleeper, and it definitely helped.

Can anyone recommend a decent in-ear thermometer? Like to hear people's experiences of pros and cons.

We bought this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-Digital-Thermometer/dp/B005K7KQD4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1356901660&sr=8-5 as it got good reviews. Truthfully, not very impressed. It needs a new cover every reading, or it doesnt work, and it recommends 2-3 readings per ear each time!! It is also really random, and gets confused by your hand heat and reads wrong. We got readings between 35.4- 38.7 in one session!

Thank you Kira and Marta. I've been keeping a record of feeds and nappies on iBabyFeed app (£1.49 but brilliant!). I think I will try offering both boobs too, haven't done that as I was worried my milk would run low in both boobs rather than just one! I think I'll try more feeds too. Thanks ladies. Hope we have a more restful night :)

fluff- we have braun thermoscan as i read they use them in the nhs, they came down to £23 on amazon and the reviews are good. Haven't used it yet though :)

You could try block feeding, to make sure LO gets the satisfying hind milk, and make sure both boobs are drained and therefore stimulated to produce i.e Feed left boob first till LO seems finished, then offer right boob. Then at the next feed, offer right boob till LO seems finished, then offer left boob, and repeat.
My LO is coming up to a year, and still BF, albeit having dropped down number of feeds. If you have any questions/worries, feel free to ask on here and one of the girls will no doubt let me know, or even ping me a pm.
