I was lucky with mine - I was starting from "bare walls" , so to some extent I could plan around the softener. I have all my valves/stop taps in the other half of the softener cupboard with hoses feeding under the kitchen units to all the appliances.
I looked at the dimensions moonrakerz and it says 525mm which is the max height. May I ask you how high the tank part is (so excluding the display at the back of the machine.
 many thanks,

The 525mm is with the cover on the clock/timer/valve, without it (as mine is) is 500mm. Height of the tank is 350mm.0

Right - deed done and machine ordered - thanks again moonrakerz.
Now, for salt. Found a good deal online - supplier just down the road from me (works out around £7.40 per 25kg bag for tablet salt delivered) but I need to order 10 bags. Stupid question (no laughing and pointing please) but how much space will that lot take up?0

If it's of any help, I've just measured a pile of 25kg bags. Two piles of 5 bags will take up a space roughly 70cms wide, 60cms deep and 60cms high. 0 0
