I say how much I owe... but blame it on the fact I have just come out of uni... even thought that's only half the reason xxx

:( You could try writing a letter, stipulating your case and affirming how long its going to take you to clear the debt if fees are being added? Sometimes I find a letter gets through to the 'real customer service people' rather then the peeps on the phone. Sorry to hear they didn't want to help.

Hmmm yeah perhaps... just always seems to be the way... you say I am struggling to keep paying the fees which go up and up and up and they ask if you're in arrears, which I am not as of yet and they say well you just need to be more careful and pay up as there's nothing we can do... so it seems unless you're drowning they can't help... :( I might try a letter but it will probably be useless too! Thanks for all your help though Posh! xxx

I'd tell them, the more people that know the more support your going to have. If they're a friend then they'll understand that you're making positive steps towards paying it off and being debt free. It might also help them to understand why you can't do things/go places as much.

Okay, just want to do a quick survey - if a friend asked "how much do you actually owe?!" (with a tone of shock/horror) would you:
    • tell them how much you owe
    • tell them it is none of their business

hmm, money is such a funny topic aint it.
Personally, if asked, i never give a straight answer... Just say we have a couple c cards etc but its managable. What makes it strange is i have no problem putting what I owe in my signature?!?

I think that's what seems odd to me. I was quite affronted by a colleague / friend who asked, but I have absolutely no problem telling you nice people everything! My parents have no idea how much I earn etc, but I am happy to post up an SOA for complete strangers to comment on. I guess my real concern is that I tend to assume nobody I know has debt, so worry about being judged, whereas everyone on here is in the same position as me.

Here we are all annoymous even though we tell eachother a lot of personal stuff, if we walked past each other we wouldn't know. Yet if we tell people we are in debt it plays in our minds that they know... like they have the upper hand, even though, chances are they have debt too.

My close friends and BF know about my debt but my parents don't. I don't have the heart to tell them xxx

I've told my OH, my sister and my parents about my debt. I've also mentioned on FB quiet a few times about my money saving ways and how I can't afford certain luxuries, so I think people know. I also decline invites to the pub quite often with the excuse "sorry I can't afford it this week"

  • Hiya, just want to say how much I'm enjoying this board. Haven't got very far with paying my debts off as such but feel so much better knowing exactly how much I owe and how I can pay it off - rather than worrying that its far too much and there is no way I'll pay it off.

I've sat down today with 6 months worth of BT and O2mobile phone bills and I've now managed to find a more suitable mobile tariff at a 1/3 of the cost of my old one - saving myself £20 per month and I also know exactly when the contract on my BT finishes and which tariff I want to swap to - again saving myself £15 per month. I really do believe that its fear of the unknown that gets us down and once its written down in black and white - in a way we can understand - we feel much better about things.
