    So here's a thought.

My mum and dad know nothing of my debt. They only think I have debt with them (£1350 as it stands). I have an extra £7000 that they know nothing about. I don't live with them and I don't have to tell them anything I don't want to.

But I know if I say 'Hey mum and dad I just paid off £7K of debt all by myself' they would be happy for me but also a bit sad that I didn't tell them in the first place...

So the question is, do I tell them? What's the worst that could happen? (they wouldn't disown me) and how on earth should I bring it up if I do?

I think I should tell them but how no idea how! xxx

Not sure Rdchick, its a pickle. My husband knows abit of my debt but seeing as his company has just called in the receivers today trying to keep the stress levels to a minimum. Personally I like the chat on here and the best feeling I get is when talking to everyone on here knowing that everyone has spurred me on.

Prime example. By overpaying the minimum and closing a few accounts down (ok had to have a loan opened by the bank as they were going to run me out of town otherwise) my credit score has gone up. Its only a small amount but at least the world is starting to realise I'm no longer a huge financial risk.

Just a high medium financial risk!

I wouldn't bother RD, if they don't need to know, they don't need to know!

My parents know i'm in debt but I'm not telling them how much. My mom keeps asking and I don't want to tell her. Basically i feel ashamed that I racked up nearly 17k on CARP!

My sister knows and she is very impressed with me virtually using all my spare income to pay it off.

It will be done by the end of the year anyway then i might tell them! :)
    In debt no more!

It is difficult and I know what you mean about not telling them because they don't need to know but I know they will say 'but we're your parents' when they find out.. and I won't be able to control my joys when I am debt free...

My family all know about my debt and have done for years. If you want to tell them then tell them hun, it sounds like you need to get this off your chest!

In a way, it's been better for them to know as I havent been able to slink back to my old ways without seeing the look of dissappointment on their faces. (It's rather like having you guys staring at me when I go in a shop but they are actually there at the side of me...)

Do it hun and don't feel embarrassed, feel proud. Yeah, you've made some mistakes but you are more than making up for them and it will feel so much better to be on this journey to debtfreedomness with your parents supporting you as well as us! xxx

Thank Jemma, I am going to tell them, I was going to tell them last week but bottled it so I am going to email my mum and tell them. This is what I am gonna say:

Hello Mum (and Dad too :) )

I have something to tell you that I was going to tell you last week but bottled it! You probably already know (no I'm not pregnant haha!) but I am in a bit of debt. It's mainly from when I was a student and living with *ex boyfriend* but it's now to the tune of £8260.49, which includes what I owe you guys too, the rest to Halifax - it's partly their fault - giving me bad advice about my student overdraft after I finished university, but what's done is done.

I wasn't going to tell you because I am embarrassed it's got as bad as it has but I am managing it and bringing it down, for example, just this year I have paid off nearly £500 this year already and plan to be pretty much debt free by the end of the year. I work a second job after work Monday - Wednesday, just cleaning with the company I used to work for where I get just over £200 a month which is a great help as it doesn't look like I am going to get a pay rise or a better paid job any time soon. I just wanted to tell you so you knew, I am not looking for any help, I got myself into this stupid mess and I plan to get myself out!

*gorgeous boyfriend* obviously knows too and has helped me by dropping my part of the rent down to just £350 including all the bills and stuff so I just buy the food and obviously pay for my car etc. I hope you're not mad, probably disappointed but I am doing something about it and learning the hard way!

    Lots of love

    Steph xxx

Sounds great, just make sure you tell them

    A) you love them

    B) you don't want any help and you can do it on your own but you felt bad lying to them

That's pretty much what I want to say :) I am just saying, look I did a silly thing but I am fixing it now, just want you to know because you're my mummy and daddy (I'm still their baby girl as they tell me regularly - I am the middle child and only girl!) and it's gonna be ok :) xxx
