Mrs_Addicted_to_Spending wrote: »Antonia1 - I think you should do what will make you happy. I left my job that I hated a few years ago to go to Uni and study for a degree in Science - i've got one more year left to do. I've never looked back - I totally love it even though we are skint :j. Happiness is much better than money.
PS when I looked into courses, teacher training for in-demand subjects like Physics and Maths actually offered bursaries to train (not just loans but actual money) which would have at least covered the course fees - has this changed as it was a few years ago when I was researching options?
Thanks, I'm definitely coming around to that way of thinking - I don't want to look back when I'm older knowing I never took a chance. And although I could earn more in my current job, teaching is still above average pay, especially in the north of England. Bursaries for training are £15k and fees £9, so that would leave just £6k to live off, which is doable if I was living at my parents (I'd pay them food / bills money but I doubt they'd accept rent), but not really so easy away from there. Having said that I did manage on my student loan when at uni first time around. If you love your OH and can see yourself with him in 5... 10... 15... 20 years time then there's no reason why marriage shouldn't just happen. It doesn't have to be this big drawn out stressful affair, personally I think the whole engagement bit is a big hoohar anyway. All that matters is if you love each other and want to spend your lives together, the rest is just tat that's stored in the attic or thrown away after the ceremony
I think what is scaring me is that we've only been together a month, and although I'm already head over heels (I swear I'm boring people with how much I talk about him) and it feels right (much more so than my ex that I was with for 4 years ), I am very aware that it is really early to be making life-changing decisions because of him. But part of me also thinks that I'm sure and he's sure, so waiting 2 years would be a waste of time (tho maybe a couple more months might be sensible :rotfl:).
Totally agree on the engagement / wedding thing. My best friend got married last year and spent around £15k on the day, and it was one of the most boring weddings I've ever been to! Not least because she was horrid to everyone, and seemed really ashamed of her family cos they're perfectly normal and now she hangs around with lots of stuck-up snobs who don't realise how hard some people work for minimum wage.:A If saving money is wrong, I don't want to be right.
