#165 - paid £80 to banks of mum & dad - don't know how make this bigger and in colour
This is 1st time I've posted since joined. Still needing to sort the other finances out, am paying much less than the required minimum payments so not declaring any of this until payment plan or interest has been frozen on the rest.
Have taken a cash in hand job, which is easy money for what I do, which has helped us through January. Have tried ebay but no luck selling, will try again with some more items this weekend as its free insertion fees again :-)Pay off all your debts by xmas 2013 #71 - £210.84 paid (BoM - £-100/130, CC1 (L) £-1831.58/1,866.00, o/d £30 + several others) - Debts paid in full 2013 x 1

Morning all! Glad you had a good birthday Jemma, and enjoy your last day at work Kerri.
I'm in a bit of a dilemma, and need some advice. I've been thinking for ages that I'd like to do teaching and I'm wondering if this might be the time to go for it. My current career isn't going anywhere and I'm fed up of living in the South East. With training to teach physics I could get a tax-free grant for living expenses which would be approximately the same as my take-home pay now, but I would have to either get another student loan to cover tuition fees or live at home and use the grant to pay fees (+ living expenses to parents obv).
The problem with living with my parents is that they live 2 1/2 hours away from my boyfriend, and by doing a course there I'd be committed to living away until July next year. He said I could live with him and go to uni there, but I don't want to move in unless I'm married (I'm Catholic btw). I think he was joking when he said "lets just married sooner rather than later then".
So, my two questions are:
1) Is it really stupid to give up a stable job in the current economic climate, even though I don't enjoy it and I'm sure I would enjoy teaching?
2) Is it really stupid to live away from my parents and take another student loan just because I want to live near my boyfriend?:A If saving money is wrong, I don't want to be right. William Shatner

Hi Antonia,
To answer question no 1, it is definitely NOT stupid! It is always the right time to follow your heart but it does take a leap of faith and some courage. I gave up a job I hated in 2009 and went back to university for a year. It is the best thing I ever did. I now have a really rewarding job and it even pays more than the job I had before even though it is at a more junior level. So you never know what you are opening yourself up for and you will be a lot happier along the way! Since you are a Catholic I would say trust that God will help you too.
As for question number 2, there are so many variables, so you need to weigh up the pros and cons and see which option wins out. I would say that student loans are a "good debt" and as long as you can pay it back over time then you will be fine but it all depends on your parents, your relationship, travel arrangements etc. I didn't have the option to live at home but if you keep a look out you can keep your expenses low by sharing with multiple people etc.
Good luck! :TDebt Free by Xmas 2012 member #281: £6,627.08/£7,735.45 (85.67%)0 -
Ooh Antonia that is a toughy. (I hope that is a marriage proposal
I love a good wedding!) I would make sure everything was set in stone first, like you've spoken to the universities you want to go to, made sure you have all the stuff you need and the funding you will definitely get and how much you would need to borrow and if you can get any grants etc. If you're completely good to go then decide. I plan to leave my current job to go into nursing, granted my first choice is with the RAF or Navy but if I can't get in then I will go through the NHS route.
Follow your heart and my motto is:
Life is too short not to love what you do

Firstly, 1) Teaching a subject like Physics IS a stable job, chances are that your current job is not.
Secondly, 2) you have to do what's right for you and if taking out a student loan will get you to do your dream whilst still being near your boyfriend AND you can afford it then you should go for it. This is a small price to pay in the long term for doing a job that you've said you have wanted to do for a long time! Who knows, you might end up teaching financial education as well!
When is the cut off point for joining the courses? I was looking to train as a secondary school maths teacher a few years ago and was looking to do the GTP where they paid you as you trained on the job.
Life is not a dress rehearsal and you have to live everyday without regrets. Imagine your life 3 years from now in your current job. Will you be happy??? Imagine your life 30 years from now, what would you tell yourself to do...?New Debt Journey: Pay off £19,622.91 by 30th April 2015 :T
