Driving through a no entry sign

  • Good posts, Ship.

In fairness to OP, they did declare that they 'took a wrong turn', as opposed to 'making a mistake'.

I know of someone near to me, that drove through a bus gate without noticing the signs, did U-turn once this was pointed out, but then realised it was a one-way street and had to turn round again. That could have been a fair few points...and what do points make...?

    Thanks for the replies.

they were cameras fixed to the traffic lights, i assume to catch people going through on red (the other way)

Red light cameras are not fixed to the traffic lights, they are normally opposite them and can be a good 20-30 metres away. They need to see the light to prove they are on red when you jump them.

The little cameras you see on top of traffic lights are simply traffic detectors for puffin crossings.

    This is a traffic detector:

There was no need for that comment, I doubt the OP is stupid, or was deliberately negligent. Anyone can make a mistake, especially if they become flustered in an unfamiliar area, or haven't had their licence very long.

no they can't - its stupidity nothing else!

    Hi,
Maybe it being a holiday season they may not be able to issue the Notice of Intended Prosecution within the prescribed 14 days and you thus escape the consequences of your error.

It was indeed a traffic detector, is this good news or bad?

    cheers
  • Good. ......
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

    That's not the point.

One doesn't say to a police officer/court that one made a mistake, I'll learn from it and move on, now let me on my merry way without any prosecution and expect to walk away.

You can do that with a police officer if you pass the attitude test.

    Huh?

    Who taught you? Mr Bean?

So what would you do if you went up a one way street the wrong way smart 4rse. Carry on up the one way street? You turn your vehicle as soon as you can rectify the mistake.

I have only driven up a one way street once in 20 years of driving, in Brighton, where a one way street was one way one day, the other direction the next.

In theory you could get an automated ticket for this, but think it's most likely they will put it down to human error rather than deliberate. You have done what you should have done by turning the car around. I read somewhere a while ago, that the police may give you a talking to, but councils may enforce a fine.

Just to be crystal clear, a traffic detector is there to monitor traffic flows and automatically change the phasing so that if a queue builds up, additional green time can be given to that approach and clear the backlog.

(This is a very crude way of describing its function, so please don't expect every queue to magically disappear in an instant!)

A traffic detector does not capture photographic images and is not for enforcement or able to transmit CCTV images to any control. You're safe:beer: Keep an eye out for those red circular signs with a white bar through them though;)
