i dont think the council actually would fine you..

Councils do have authority to issue PCNs for moving traffic contraventions. They can't put points on your licence, though. But we don't even know if the CCTV was in use or if it is used such purposes. The OP can only wait and see what arrives.

ive done by mistake twice (different areas) once the police let me off with a warning and the 2nd time was council cctv and nothing ever happened..
you cant do this "by mistake" you do it by negligence or stupidity...the signs are big enough to see!

    Thanks for the replies.

they were cameras fixed to the traffic lights, i assume to catch people going through on red (the other way)

Then I doubt you have anything to worry about.

There was no need for that comment, I doubt the OP is stupid, or was deliberately negligent. Anyone can make a mistake, especially if they become flustered in an unfamiliar area, or haven't had their licence very long.

    Anyone can make a mistake

You are wrong, some people on this forum have never made a single mistake in their life. They are indeed people of perfect judgement.:rotfl:

Still not an excuse with the law.

I wouldn't like to call the OP stupid but they were clearly negligent by making the mistake.

I don't know what you mean by 'deliberately negligent,' one doesn't have to have intention to be negligent or not, either one is or isn't.

Don't understand 'unfamiliar area' either. The UK has uniformed road signs, if it says No Entry in Aberdeen it means the same in Aldershot.

As for excusing a driver because 'they may not have held a licence for long' is just crazy, all the more reason that road signage is still fresh in the mind.

Despite that, one passes a test having reached the standard to drive on the road, so no excuse.

It's happened, see what transpires and move on but take greater care in future and improve their driving skills.

    That's not the point.

One doesn't say to a police officer/court that one made a mistake, I'll learn from it and move on, now let me on my merry way without any prosecution and expect to walk away.

    It doesn't work like that.

In law a mistake is not an excuse, some members on here simply tell it like it is, not what we would like to hear.

Yes there are, do you drive?

Sorry - just checked and there MAY be points attached to contravening a no entry sign

Whether there are points depends on whether it is no entry for all vehicles (=points) or no entry for certain vehicles, eg "no entry except buses" (=no points). Presumably this one is all vehicles so points would attach to the offence, if prosecuted.

Will try harder in future :o

Only if you receive a FPN from the police. In the case of council CCTV, you'd get a PCN with no points attached. However, in this case, it looks like the OP is referring to a traffic-light camera, so is probably in the clear.
