This did make me chuckle
I was a big sceptic ...... I like having a book in my hands etc and just didn't think it would be "me".
However I have to say I love mine- I've put some pros / cons down which hope help:
Good- Fits into my handbag & not too heavy
- Great for Dr / Hosp appts as it's always there! (and would be the same if I was stuck in traffic!)
- Multiple books in one place - really useful if I'm nearly finished a book & have a hosp appt .... I'd have been toying with the idea of taking 2 but usually wouldn't as they're too heavy!
- Will be fantastic for holidays for the same reason
- Battery lasts for ages
- Loads of free books to download - I've discovered "new" authors I'd never have tried if I'd had to pay for their books which is great as I am a book-worm:)
- Also if I start a free book and don't like it, I don't feel like I need to read the whole thing (which I would do if I'd paid for it!)
- Being able to change the text size is fantastic - I can take it to bed and make the text bigger to let me read without my glasses and give my eyes a break:)
- Easier to read in bed than a "real" book - you're able to keep your hands/arms under the covers!
- Marks the spot where you finish reading
- You can create folders (bit like the different sections in a library) to store the books in
- You can loan books to friends/relatives so if you make sure you buy different ones (if one that needs paying for), this keeps costs down
- I still can't get over how quickly the books download! It's really easy & the Amazon site will let you know if you've already got a copy of the book
- The free books change all the time so you need to check the site regularly - you may get a book free one week but it's got a fee the next (and vise versa)
- You can email from it
- I do miss being able to see how far through the book I am - although it gives you a % as you've no visual idea of how much this is, I find this a bit difficult (esp if reading late at night & trying to judge if I can finish the book!)
- I do sometimes still miss the "having the book in my hand" feeling
- Can't read it in the bath ..... (some people may do but......)
I have a cover - I was worried about the screen getting damaged in my bag, but it was £4.68 from a seller on Amazon:)
I do still have "real" books - mainly as I've loads anyway .... but I'd still need the odd one for reading in the bath etc!
HTH - will try to think of more during the day!
Good morning,
I'm here to declare yesterday as NSD 7!! :j which means I am over the half way mark!!! Woohooo. I wasn't sure I could do this but I'm sure I can make it to 12 now.
I hope you don't me butting in on your converstaion about the kindle vs books discussion Jinty and rising from the ashes. I was very much against the idea of getting a kindle or similar for the reasons that you state and was adament that I didn't want one for Christmas. Anyway my OH bought me one and although I was very skeptical initially, I love it now and have read 13 books since boxing day!;) My e-reader is touch screen and is so easy to operate. So I would recommend them!! I do understand what you are saying about books though, I like the physical book still but on balance the e-reader is more practical (apart from reading in the bath- I won't be trying that!)

Yesterday was NSD #8 :T
I decided that all I needed was milk, and that this could wait until today (I actually have plenty for a few days, but it's too OOD for me to be happy using for it my chap).
Today will be spendy  As well as the milk, I also have a P@yP@l invoice to settle (last of my craft kits from the US - should really have been dealt with last month, but she held it back until now so that the parcel didn't get caught in the Christmas mail) and need to sort out my road tax (due at end of month, but do it on-line so I don't need to find my MOT or insurance documents).

Good morning folks:j,
I've already had a spend day today due to some internet shopping:o, so hopefully tomorrow will be better:D. I'm also going out to get some groceries later as I may as well make it a big spendy! I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and grabs as many NSDs as they can.:)If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.
£2 savings jar £300:D
Total credit card debts £1250:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: - Will I ever learn!!0 -
Hi, I've been down the post office today as had to send a letter recorded and had to get some cream for DD, bloody dr didn't phone me until 10 mins before they closed last night to tell me I'd have to go in to see a dr and wouldn't just be able to get a prescription from reception. So have had to spend £2.75 on that to get her through to Thursday when I can get down there with her.
I'm going to just give you my tuppence worth on a couple of things.
LMH don't forget if you have remote locking on your car it won't work with the battery disconnected, so if you have a key hole in the door you'll have to use that (unless you've got a Ford of course and have to use the key to get under the bonnet).
My thoughts on Kindles. I go completely against the grain here and I'm a hater. I got the Sony version because I didn't like the look of the Kindle (the new one is very nice looking, but think the keyboard one is ugly) and at the time that was the best one to get, the Kindle had only been out a month or so. Anyway, I begged and begged for one, went on and on for ages about one, and DH ended up spending his insurance money for his broken laptop on one for me. In the 18 months I had it I read 4 or 5 books on it. I found that books were very expensive (although Kindles are much better as they have a lot more free ones and the Daily Deal), there is a lot less choice, and it's just not the same! I hated it, I couldn't get into the books like I can with paper ones, like I said I read 4 or 5 in a year and a half, since getting rid of it in November I've read double that! With a proper book I can really lose myself in it, I get really immersed in the book and literally can't put it down, I'll be reading it while giving the DC a bath, while feeding DD, while cooking dinner etc, any 2 minutes spare (not that I can remember what that's like!), I'll have a book in my hand. But with the ereader, it wasn't like that at all, it would take me a few months to read one book and I'd have to re-read bits so many times because I hadn't absorbed it. This is silly, but I used to come out of WHSmith or Waterstones almost crying because I felt that I couldn't buy real books. I'd go in and think there was no point in browsing because I couldn't buy anything, and I just missed that and missed the buying real, proper books so much. Sold it on ebay in the end for about 1/4 of what I paid for it. I would say though, if I was commuting I quite possibly would get a little Kindle as it would be handy if I was travelling and it saves carrying a book about, but for everyday, normal use in the home they're not for me at all. But I know I'm in a very very small minority as most people love them.Clean credit file:12 mthsCar loan: FREE! :jTHE PLAN: 1.Pay off debt £8808.42(£3254.45, £1570.32, £2698.33, £0:dance:, £1000, £285.32) 2.Save monthly for Christmas/insurance etc £150 per month 3.Save for emergencies /£1500 4.Save for our B&B £????depends which one takes our fancy0 -
No NSD for me yesterday or today:( Had to help DD get some final bits for her holiday in a few weeks time, on the plus side managed to get a guide book and phrase book from the charity shop saving pounds. Today I have to get a few small bits.
Hopefully tomorrow should be a NSD. Not sure about Monday as OH now says he wants the allocated spendy day to be a Friday not a Monday which has thrown me abit so will be spending some time seeing if this is possible next week.
Londongirl congrats on passing your exam:T
Lotti Great news about your sisterI hate the tension an overdrawn arguement creates.
IF thank you for your pics, they always make me smile and sometimes the odd wiggle escapes:D
PINK What did you decide about the £10. I agree with the idea another poster came up with of putting half towards DP card and saving the other half.
Rising I am an avid bookworm and have never been interested in Kindles, just didn't see them as something for me for many reasons including the fact that I am really not a techie/gadget person. However looking at your pro/con list I can feel myself giving the idea some serious consideration. But don't you miss the browsing in a book shop, the smell, the feel, the atmosphere?

TBH I was rarely in a bookshop:o (unless on my annual trip into town!) - we did used to have a ..... ohhhhh forgotten the name of the big book place that closed last year/year before - they were all over the country?
I loved that place (it's going to annoy me .... hopefully it'll come to me) but since it's gone there's not really much available around here so I tend to get most of my books online or at the sm anyway.
ETA was it Borders?
I do still have a look in the sm and buy the odd one or two if they're an author I really like / new book etc - just to read in the bath of course!:):)
Having a lazy day - fell asleep on the sofa with wee cat. Had an awful dream last night that woke me up and couldn't get back to sleep - can't see me going far today so hoping for a NSD!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

No NSD to report as went shopping for all the "bits" required for the recipes I'm going to try out.
Did my Zumba class then into town to meet mt friend for lunch. It was great to see her, and I enjoyed the chat. ( How many calories does chatting use?:rotfl:)
She was waxing lyrical about the Kindle she got for Christmas - seems everyone I know got one from Santa. I was a bit sceptical about them I must admit, but now I'm warming to the idea! I know some of you guys have one so I'd like your opinion on them. Do you still use paper books as well? Or do you find you use nothing but the Kindle? Which one - the £89 one or the dearer one with bells & whistles? Do you use a cover?
I think I am goin to start a Kindle fund - I fancy one for taking on holiday but I would still value some advice!
Today I am off to Costco for some "bits" and I want to price new pots as ours are a bit sad and we also need new pillows. Oh how exciting!
Then I plan to put my feet up with my book( yes, a real one! LOL!)
I bought the kindle for this reason but had intended to still use books as I thought the kindle wouldn't be the same.
How wrong I was. It is great and I prefer it to books.I still have a few I need to read but then I doubt I will ever buy books again.
I bought the kindle with the keyboard for £109 in Te$co. There is a more expensive one but I didn't think I needed that as I download my books at home.
I bought the case with the light in from Ama$on for about £50 and it is FAB but u need the keyboard one to use it.
I think if you decide to get one you won't regret t.DFW Nerd 1394.

If anyone has the cheaper one like me and wants a light ... you can get them in the "household essentials" bit in Mr T (at the end of the household cleaning stuff aisle in our one) - there's loads of wee gadgets in here that are cheap - I got a thermometer for the fridge, tarpaulin and my kindle light .... £1.27!
Not as fancy as a "proper" one but gives off a reasonable amount of light & certainly worked a treat in our power cut the other week! HTH:)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

It's going to be a spend day for me-need some fruit and veg.
I'd love to get a Kindle,as I love the idea of the free books available, but mostly because I live in a very small flat and each time I buy a book,my heart sinks a little.I also like to keep my books, but think that I'm going to have to be a bit ruthless and declutter some more. For some reason though,Amazon UK don't deliver Kindles outwith the UK and I would have to buy via the US site, which I wouldn't do.I must check again, maybe it's changed since.I think that I've sometimes seen that some Kindle books are only available to people in the UK(?).
Hope you all have a great (and NSD if possible) weekend!0 -
I managed NSD 5 yesterday. Not going as well as I'd hoped though as son needed funds and dog needed trip to vet this week. Today is a food shopping spend day.Spend less now, work less later.0
