I have a budget and have shaved everything down so that we can manage as OH has been made redundant. Pots for every thing (some of them virtual pots).
As every penny is accounted for I cant see how I can make even one extra payment. How do you all do it?

  • Mint1955 - I've got no idea really, I'm still learning... and reading a lot on here... I'm trying to give up the odd treat (actually, going to have to give them all up for a while)... like a take-away, and then put the money towards a CC.

I've got no idea how anyone else does it, but there seems to be some very wise people here, I'm hoping they'll share their secrets. :o

Bit of a problem this month with at least 3 Birthday's and a wedding pressie to buy and lots of race-for-life's going on!

Today I paid an extra £14.00 towards a CC. Yippee... every little helps.

    Good luck all,

'Extra payment every week' (started May '12) £60.00 this week = £150.94 so far
    ;)
'Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge' (#174 started May '12) £33.00 this week = £86.19 so far :)

I think we all do something different and it's unique to each person's situation. Most of my extra payments have come from rounding down my bank account on a friday to the nearest £5 or £10, though I appreciate while you are counting every penny this may not be possible. In the past I've also done things like forgetting to put the lottery on so paying the £2 off the debt instead or saving on an expected purchase so paying the difference to the credit card etc. I remember reading that someone walked to work and paid their bus fare to the debt instead. Again these things may not be possible for you.

Have you looked at the make £10 per day challenge over on debtfree wannabe forum for ideas to make extra cash while things are so tight? Things like doing surveys in return for vouchers, ebaying, weighing in gold or textiles etc can all help.

I've seen that some people look at the savings on their receipts and pay off whatever they've saved. I think some people even just round down their bank account so if it's showing £XX.84 they pay off 84p.
It doesn't matter how much you pay, from little acorns ;)

Hi Mint Think it depends on peoples circumstances really as to how much extra you can pay.I started like you with my OH been made redundant and I knew I was going to really struggle to make any payments at all.So started selling off everything I didn't need on Ebay and doing surveys,Kept a diary of every penny I spent and thought about anything I brought (or in my case didn't buy) I now would say I put 80% back on the shelf after thinking about it.
I was lucky as OH got another job quite quickly and I also got a 2nd job which really helps.
Hope your OH gets another job soon and things start getting easier for you.
It is amazing at what you can find in your house to sell. When you have too.Good luck

Debt free and Mortgage free thank you to all for your encouragement and advice

Evening guys. Glad to see we have new people joining our gang! Like Mavvymoo, I also manage to put back 80% of stuff - clothes especially. I realised I had perfectly wearable stuff stashed into cupboards but only wear 40% of it (not any more though). I skim my bank account every Friday to "tidy up" and also count up the spare change in my purse each week which soon builds up (and makes the handbag lighter!). Managed £12.40 this week. I guess everyone finds things that work for them. Some weeks are harder than others, but it helps to know that we are all the club together! Good luck.

Thanks for the answers. Lots of thinking going on here and I love the idea of saving say a bus fare then using that to pay to a debt etc. Rounding up the odd pennies at the end of the week is also an easy one without causing to much of a stretch.
Its funny I was getting stressed thinking I had got to stretch what I didnt have but now can smile and think about it from a different angle. Does relieving OH of his loose change count LOL
