If anyone has been watching 'The men who made us fat' on BBC2 on a Thursday night the 3rd part is on Thursday next week (the flipping tennis over ran last week and it was cancelled)

I've been watching that, it is really interesting but it's not quite as cut and dried as they try to make out. For example, they try to tell us that people didn't eat between meals before the finger of fudge advert. Well when I was a child in the 70's it was normal to be offered a home made cake or biscuit/jam tart thing every time you went round someone's house. Which seemed to happen a lot more in the 70's. Schools had tuck shops and sold, yes biscuits and cakes. All children were given a biscuits at school with our milk, which was paid for by the government. And this was the way it was when my parents were at school too. Sweet shops have been around for even longer, they are mentioned in historical novels, whole families lived of the profits of these little shops. People didn't eat sweets only at meal times until after the finger of fudge advert had told them it was OK to have a snack.

It is true that we weren't allowed to eat in the streets, but we were allowed to in parks, on the beach and up on the downs(countryside). A lot of middle aged people had middle age spread. They weren't called fat they were just called middle aged. Now they would be called over weight or obese.

    Hi all!

Aldahbra, it's really interesting to hear someone mention how it really was in the 70s, many people I speak to said snacks were often e.g. a Sunday treat, not a daily thing - like everyone has crisps every day now, but wouldn't have then (but they could just be trying to make us feel bad).

Well I have been out on a site all day today, so lots of walking. The good thing about being on site is I always eat less, the bad thing is, because we were out and about, I knew I would only get to use the dirtiest toilets (only ever used by men, in cobwebby dusty buildings, never ever ever cleaned as they're in gated compounds), so I did not drink a dot of water to make sure I wouldn't have to resort to the loos. That has made me feel a bit hungry now I'm home, as I haven't hydrated yet.

    B: Muesli + yoghurt, kiwi, 2 krisprolls
L: Ham and cream cheese sandwich on seeded bread, apple, 2 fuit slice biscuit things (49 cals each)
D: 1st course: bowl of HM soup, 1.5 slices of seeded bread, 2nd course: bbq chicken breast (100 cals) + grated courgette, baked mushrooms and 3 croquettes
Snacks: None. Zilch. Nada. (site visits - yay!) but I think I may have a Ritz or two later.

Well it is true in a way, shop bought crisps etc were a special treat, we didn't have them all the time.

The difference was that nearly everything on offer for regular consumption was either home made or made by a local small business. Except perhaps biscuits; A lot of people made biscuits, but I do remember a lot of packet ones around too. But you just had one or maybe two of things and you shared a packet of crisps, you didn't eat it all yourself.

Evening everyone :-) not long to go until weigh day now! I'm actually looking forward to it!

    Today's meals:

    B - porridge
L - pasta with tomato flavour pasta sauce & a slice of wedding cake
D - Shop bought oven chips

    No snacks!
Drinks: diet cola, 1 glass of whole milk, 2 cups of tea with semi-skimmed milk & sweeteners.

Exercise: 10 mins walking & 30 mins on wii sports tennis! I am super proud of myself for the exercise as I can't do it usually due to my sciatica.

I'm just over 500 calories under target today, and 384 of that is what I burned off by exercising.

My new exercise goal is as of tomorrow to do 10 mins on wii sports before each meal, and gradually up it to 30 mins before each meal!

My first weight loss mile stone is -1 stone. -4.8lbs gone, -9.2lbs to go!

    Yesterday's food:

B- mango and strawberries with soya yogurt
L - a packet of salt and shake crisps without adding the salt (130 cals), a small banana, a soya yogurt (protein)
D - jerk chicken with peppers and onions, rice and peas (made with half fat coconut milk)
S - hot chocolate made with mostly water, sweetener, cocoa powder and low calorie soya milk, some raspberries (this was a major achievement as I felt rubbish and really needed chocolate - this was a compromise!)

So much for me starting my new exercise plan today. I woke up this morning and my back was killing me from the exercise I did yesterday! I think I pushed it a bit too much... if it feels any better tonight I'll have another go.

I'm thinking I should start off by doing it every other day, that gives my back a days rest in between sessions.

    Today's meal plan is:

    B - Porridge
L - Pasta with tomato pasta sauce
D - Shop Bought Oven Chips

I'm not planning on snacking either, mainly as there's nothing in to snack on. Shopping is delivered tonight though so at most I may have some fruit if it's ripe when it arrives. Which I don't think it is!

I hope the pound I seem to have put on this week goes by tomorrow. I obviously am not doing as well as I thought!

I was doing really well on the sugar reduction until 2 fingers of kitkat shoved themselves down my throat. Still, if I wasn't trying so hard I would have had more than 2...

Breakfast - 2 bacon, 2 scrambled eggs and tinned tomatoes, at 7.30am and I was full all morning.
Lunch - Small bowl of soup, slice of ham and a little leftover lasagne filling (no pasta)
Snack - greek yogurt, 2 fingers of kitkat
Dinner - something with chicken and veg...
June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

Progress is easier to acheive than perfection.

    Evening All

DH is back home - hurray. I do miss him when he has to be away overnight. I am feeling great now, with his return and the sun shining and the fact that our viewers today want to come back tomorrow for a second look. Fingers crossed.

    B: Raspberries with Greek yoghurt.
L: Other half of yesterday's homemade cauliflower base pizza - with tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and cheese. HM dark chocolate mousse.
D: Yellowfin sole with lemon and pepper dusting, roasted red pepper, chestnut mushrooms and cauliflower with a creamy cheese sauce.

Exercise: 5 miles of walking. 30 lengths at the swimming pool.
