I will look out for that book. I missed the first one of The Men Who Made Us Fat, I do have a book that covers a lot of the same stuff though, it's a good series, however it's mostly people like us, who are trying and interested in that sort of thing who watch it. Not the parents feeding their kids McD's and Jam sarnies... who would really benefit from the knowledge.

I've been watching that too. It makes me really angry to think that so much damage has been done, probably knowingly, just to make some people rich.

Hello MrsCD I've seen you on GC too.

I need help!!! I am 57 and until this year have always been thin and 9 stone. I have never been one for excersise as such but was always on the go with physical or stressful jobs. I gave up work in september and I am now 10 stone and rising and my belly and hips particularly looks awful and wobble. Also my clothes are all tight and I am exhausted seemingly doing nothing. I dont eat any different and I am walking and doing a few rides on my bike but I havnt a clue where to really start with trying to lose some of this fat. Doc says I am healthy apart from high cholesterol and osteoporosis for which I am on medication.
Is it just getting older ? Can it be shifted at this age or am I going to have to get used to it?

Hello Mint 1955. Not too old, my Nana dieted in her late seventies. She also got a keep fit exercise tape which she did at home. Then when she was 80 she got herself a new husband for 11 years as well.

If you really are eating the same amount then the weight gain must be due to less exercise. Can you up your exercise? Join a class or sport or something?

But it is sooooo much easier to eat more when you are at home, just the odd second helping or biscuit or whatever your personal temptation is, it is easy to overlook them at the end of they day, as if they don't count. I too think a food diary is a really good place to start and what you can swap or miss out.

When I started my diet I initially followed a meal plan from a magazine, it worked really well, got me meal planning and thinking along the right lines. You could use plans from here

I had bought 2 pots of double cream! Unfortunately, DGD (aged just 2years 4 months) was helping to bring in the shopping from the hall. She picked one pot up by its lid and it emptied all over. She then brought the dripping pot along the hall and into the kitchen to show me saying 'Oh no, what a mess!' Fortunately, most of the pot went on the doormat so I could take it outside and swill it down. The trail of droplets, her dress and feet still took a while to clear up though!!

This little story made me smile ~ thanks for sharing it with us.

Breakfast bowl of oaty cereal things, forget what they are called
Lunch jacket sweet potato and sushi. Slice of hm chocolate cake (not diet version but not secret snacking)
Snack little pot of yoghurt raisins thingys
dinner boiled ham, potato and mixed veg

    Exercise class at local gym

Hi Mint :), never too late, I personally don't regard it as an age thing and anyway you're just a spring chicken! Really it all comes down to letting things slide bit by bit, not doing as much as we could and all the little extra snacks and treats. It takes years for weight to go on but we don't seem to notice it til suddenly we're looking at a size or two bigger in clothes.

I decided 18 months ago that 12st 2lb was stupid at 4' 11 1/2", I've never been tiny but not more that 9 1/2stones in the past. It crept on over the years, after early retirement - I had to give up work at 58 as I have COPD, that's when all that weight started to go on. Thanks to this thread I've lost 3 stone, setting small goals is a great way to do it and makes the targets manageable (even if I do miss mine by a lb or so every time :o). I also now have arthritis in hands, shoulders and neck but my attitude is I didn't invite these things into my life so they have to live with me, not me with them.

I think the simplest but most productive way is to just keep on a slow steady path, don't try to lose a stone in a week, eat sensibly, don't starve yourself (I eat better now than I ever did when I wasn't losing weight) and join a gym, or if that's not possible then up your exercise at home a little more day by day. And most important, keep coming back :D

Btw, I'm 65 next month and I'm certainly not too old for anything! ;)

    Today I ate:

Snack - pomgranate & elderflower drink, half a slice of millionaire's shortbread :o DH had the other half!

    [/QUOTE]

My OH realised I couldn't be happy without a dog in the house! She has filled a hole in my life after I moved out of the family home and left my 2 GSDs. I'm now up at 7am to take her for a walk, again at lunch, then again on an evening!

That should certainly shed some weight!!

    Currently at 139lbs, the lightest I've been in 5 years ! :j

    I'm also 5ft 4, My digital scales also tell me I'm 28 % body fat, and 57 % Muscle.

I use the wii for my weigh in, it is really useful, because I didn't post my starting weight the wii remembers for me. Otherwise it is quite easy to "remember" the weight loss pounds and "forget" the weight on pounds and double account them. With the wii there is no cheating possible. My DH did this, with all the lbs he's says he's lost he should be about 4 stone! Strange he is exactly the same weight as when he started.

    Afternoon all :)

Admission of a BIG mistake. Didn't have breakfast before I went to the gym this morning :o and boy did I know it! Must never do that again, I was flagging only 15 mins in. Today was the first day of the new exercise regime, other than the above I have come home feeling a lot more enthusiastic about going. The first month was gentle for a reason, I've never been to a gym before so they didn't want to be calling ambulances! My personal trainer (love saying that, sounds awfully posh ;)!) said we'll look at the programme periodically and tweak it so it never gets boring. Makes sense to me :)

    B - missed
D - fusilli with veg (diced celery, red onion, garlic, yellow & green peppers, mushroom), chopped sun-dried tomato and pesto. SF jelly.
    T - 25g F&F, sk milk
    S - Nectarine, pear, pineapple
E - 45 mins gym this morning. Will see how I feel after siesta about step/weights...

Have a good rest of the day :)

    Evening All,

I had to take DGD to her other grandma's after lunch today (her turn) and really miss her. We took her out for lunch and at least I had her all morning. Her parents are back tomorrow so I just have one more cat feed to do.

B: 2 boiled eggs mashed with salt, pepper and butter.
L: Chicken Chasseur with carrots, green beans, cabbage and peas (shared with DGD).
D: Salmon salad - with HG rocket, spinach and beetroot leaf thinnings, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, mushroom, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pine nuts and French dressing. HM dark chocolate mousse.

Exercise: Couple of short walk to shops and back. Just about to go for a long walk with dog walking friend so that should be 6 or 7 miles.

    Rose

ETA: Did a 7 mile walk
