OK. I've somehow freaked myself out by reading the thread about car boot sales. I was planning to do one on my own in the spring, but now wondering if it's worth the hassle... I am reluctant to ask a friend to help me because I feel embarrassed about my 'junk'. Tempted instead to see if a local charity shop would like to collect my stuff and just take it off my hands.

I am sure a lot of people will love doing car boots, but I hated it.

We did one last summer to clear out a load of carp when we moved and I was so stressed most of the time. People were ripping stuff out of my hands as I was unloading. I am happy to haggle, but found the aggression vile. OH was much better at it than me, he gets less flustered. I ended up sitting in the car reading and let him get on with it.

Anything worth selling goes on ebay, anything else to the CS. We made about £100, which paid for the car rental for the week. But honestly, I would never ever do it again.

I have spent the afternoon ripping out my kitchen. It was horrible  The worst thing is that we found a dated label on the back of one of the carcasses - dated 2006. I have no idea how anyone could let something get so disgusting in 5/6 years. We'd thought it was 20 years of grot, but no, the previous owners must just have been allergic to cleaning.

There was so much random stuff behind the units that when we pulled them off the walls, OH and I were taking bets on what would fall out next. I was not expecting a harmonica.

    Ditch 100 in January 51/100

    43. The harmonica (see above) - bin
    44. The entire upper run of kitchen units, plus doors and half of the plaster behind them *sigh* - recycling centre
    45. The hob - recycling centre
    46. The worksurfaces - recycling centre
    47. The last two plastic parts of the original shower quadrant - recycling centre
    48. Old toilet and cistern - recycling centre
    49. The start of the laminate tiles from the kitchen - recycling centre
    50. Some more old clothes - clothes bin at recycling centre
    51. Oven extractor unit - recycling centre. There was £1.02 in loose change and a plastic reindeer wedged in the flue. No idea why.

    Half way!

Ooh, and I found my P60 amongst the paperwork junk, so can complete my tax return now, so some good is coming of decluttering (well, if good is avoiding a late filing fine)

Have sold another large bit of furniture on ebay as well and some other bits - but will update once they have left the building :)

Have a good and junk free day :) cel x

  • Trying, you've just done what I was going to do - you beat me to it!
  • Thanks for your reply celyn.

I did 1 car boot years ago with friends. Didn't make as much money as I would have liked given the fact it was a very long day and the weather wasn't too great either. I ended up bringing home so much stuff I really questioned its value. That's not to say it would be like that again, but even so, I'm not sure.

I must admit, the thought of getting rid of stuff sooner (for no money) rather than later is increasingly appealing!

I have done some small decluttering this weekend.
*Baked 2 sets of breakfast muffins (24 in total) that I eat as my midmorning snack at work. OH bought loads of dried fruit and nuts in the autumn to make a fruit ring, this was never done though so have loads in the cupboard to use up. Managed to throw away 2 bags yesterday.
*Put all Christmas bags away in the cupboard yesterday together with the new Christmas cards
*I cleared the hallway this morning where loads of stuff to be recycled had been left during the week. It has now been taken to the recycling bin which is nearly full now and will be emptied tomorrow.
*I hoovered and descaled the kettle.
    * I also put all recipes that are cut outs from magazines into our recipe folder

    Well pleased with this weekend.

    Good luck to you all.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

    Debt-free and Proud!
Only a few items to declare:
    • candle stubs
    • broken kitchen timer
    • OOD jars from the fridge
Hopefully, there will be a few more before the end of the day. Despite the slow progress I'm feeling positive about reaching 100 by the end of January. :)

I've done a fair few boot sales, so old hand now. But like you, the thought of getting rid of stuff sooner rather than later appeals to me more and more. I really don't have the storage. So, I am going to fleabay and if it doesn't sell for what I want, off to CS. I do enjoy boot selling but I end up with a loaded car when I leave because of stuff I've bought!! :o:eek:

Three things so far today, listed on eBay so can't count until they sell but even if they don't they will be traded in or off to the charity shop as appropriate.

    Wii game
Brand new Nike sports bra (bought wrong size and forgot to take it back, silly me!)
A board game (technically this will be OH 1/100!!! I am trying so hard not to nag but it's his and DSS rubbish, I mean treasured possessions making the house look untidy now I have sorted my things!)

Will update later if I can be bothered to do any more xxx

I've done a couple of car boots, always end up buying other peoples stuff. I now just donate when and where I can. I hope in a way it will help stop me buying carp in the future if I know I am not going to get any return on it. Having said that most of my stuff is low value anyway. Might think differently if I was sitting on a small fortune.

    Good day today;

    39. 2x bags of carp
40 ANOTHER bag of plastic and cardboard for r/c bin
    41. Cardigan - Clothes bin at supermarket
    42. Dead evergreen foilage cut off the willow ring I use as a wreath into garden waste bin.

2 roasting tins made it as far as the front door before I had a 'Oh but they would really handy for sitting the pots and seedtrays on the window sills in' moment. Hmmm. We shall see what happens with them.

Food shop was made with what is nearing their eatby date in the cupboards in mind (v.organised eh?)

    Getting there.
