It has got me thinking about my own clutter. I have severe depression which is being medicated, and I have no doubt that my clutter is a symptom - running away from life - parking it in a corner until I can deal with it. When the clutter - and all the other symptoms - starting overtaking the house, and I curled up and became incapable of facing the day - that's when I admitted I was ill and needed to seek some help. I know that I'm feeling well again for the first time in a decade - albeit with the help of drugs - and I suddenly seem able to tackle a whole shed load of stuff - metaphorical and literal :rotfl: I'm hoping to reduce the medication at the end of the year, but am hoping that my attempts to tackle 'stuff' of all shapes and sizes will make my recovery more achievable.

Thanks Rumbly for sharing that - :j for starting to feel well after so long. It sounds like it's a whole new life for you now and you've got freedom to take control. So pleased for you. I found it thought provoking to read about the connection between clutter and depression, both not unknown in my family. Do you think if we can keep on top of the clutter, it would help keep the depression at bay, or is it just a symptom of what's going on within - that we are generally losing control?

marmiterulesok, I'm going to keep books as a separate item in my August Abolition, just to keep me on my toes. Whilst I have a couple of shelves which could do with more work, I've also got several books which are half read and I need a push to get them finished and dealt with - certainly my current one will go to cs in 1 chapter's time! I also need a push to read the papers/mags that come into the house and then deal with them. I'm so pleased that empty shelves mean I can use them for other things which previously didn't have a home, and places around the house are starting to look tidier - so I've left in a number for decluttered areas just to keep going there.

That really brilliant Rumbly. I empathise totally as I have suffered with depression for over 15 years. I have good days when I can see "the light" and have the motivation to deal with the accumulated clutter. When I have that, it gives me a huge surge of good feelings which motivate me to do a bit more - hopefully a new circle. I also feel, personally, that having tidyness and order around me makes a peaceful, calm and tranquil place where all the stress is easier to let go and dissolve. Its really a win/win situation.

    keep it up, :T

Thanks suzeesu2000, I really appreciate the support and encouragement.

Thank you so much for your support, silentsister. My gut feeling in answer to your question is yes to both! It's definitely a symptom in my case, but I can't help feeling that having an uncluttered life/home will help me keep on more of an even keel - and suzeesu seems to bear witness to that too. It's an interesting link between clutter and depression. I think they can be mutually exclusive - you can be depressed without clutter, and cluttered without depression, but I feel my clutter's buildup has coincided with my spiral downwards. It feels like a symptom rather than a cause, though.

Well done everyone - every small step improves our homes :T

I currently have six black bags full of old clothes. There is a place that will give you £5.00 per black bag of clothes so I am going to take them there and get some money back on them.

I have sorted out a flower tea set which belonged to my late mum and a complete dinner service which was hers as well. Those will go on Ebay.

The stuff for the car boot has grown somewhat - I am doing that car boot on August bank holiday weekend. I have two massive bags of coat hangers, so I am going to take those with me as well, if no one wants both of the bags then I shall skip them on the way home.

Loft is looking a little clearer, still some way to go, but the thing is when we move home we simply will not be in a position to take it all with us so it has to be cleared out and gone otherwise it is going to cost us to move it. The fact that it is up in the loft says we don't actually need it anyway - so it needs to go!!
