I just wanted to share this little story from last night
Little Miss Happy (aged 19) travelled to her uni town yesterday evening to spend a few days with her boyfriend who lives there. She was due to go today, but decided that she would surprise him by going yesterday evening and meeting him as he finished work at 10.20 pm. The trip involves a train journey with two changes and finally a 10 minute bus ride to his house. She planned the journey carefully and set off with her ticket and £15 cash to cover her final bus fare and a coffee/sandwich if needed en route.
Unfortunately, her middle train was delayed 20 minutes which meant she missed her final connection. Luckily there was a later train, but it wasn't due for an hour and a half, and she was stuck all alone in a strange town's station, late at night and feeling quite vulnerable. She also knew that she would be arriving in her uni city (which can be quite rough) close to midnight when no buses would be running. Being a country mouse, she got upset and started crying. A middle-aged lady who had been sat near her on the delayed train approached her and suggested that rather than wait the hour and a half, they share a taxi for the 30 mile journey. Little Miss explained that she didn't have enough money. The lady told her not to worry, and that she would pay. She then called a taxi and they both got in. The lady had the driver take Little Miss right to her boyfriend's home, even though it was MILES out of her way, before it carried on taking her to her own home at the other end of the city.
Little Miss offered her the £15 as a contribution, but the lady wouldn't take it. When Little Miss tried to insist, the lady said that she has a daughter a similar age and she hopes that if ever SHE needs help, someone will do the same for her.
I just thought it was so lovely that this lady went out of her way to help my daughter - it cost her both in time and money - and would take nothing in return. I wish I could thank her, but I have no idea who she is. I believe in karma though and hope something wonderful happens for herLBM Dec 2011. Oh dear, it's six days since I last posted on my diary
.
Partly I've been busy with Real Life, but partly I've felt a bit down in the dumps because money is so tight just now. Anyway, it's payday on Friday and all the credit card bills are in so I've updated my signature with the new, rather disappointing, figures. It has been an awful month with less income and more expenses than usual. I have hated doing it, but I have had to use credit cards to keep us all fed.
I suppose I should be quite pleased at the figures really. I'm just making minimum repayments this month (which still come to £878), but even after paying off the additional credit card spend, our unsecured debt has still reduced by £279 since last payday. That's almost £65 reduction per week. The logical side of me knows that's actually pretty amazing, but quite honestly our debts are so massive that if I can't speed things up we will NEVER be debt free in 2019.
I have been doing some things to offset the problems:
1) I have some stuff on Ebay. One is a decent saddle which currently has a bid of £50 and might get higher before it closes on Sunday.
2) I have done some overtime at work (which is very rarely available) and that should net me £170 after tax, but won't be paid until mid-August.
3) I phoned Barclays to chase up my PPI. They had closed my case accidentally. They've re-opened it now I've raised it, but I'm not holding out much hope for a pay-out.
I'm looking forward to payday on Friday so I can plan the month's budget, but there are a lot of expenses coming up.
Lots of diary-catching-up to do. Back later x

Hi HN, there are days when it all seems never ending, but as you can see yourself, the overall debt is coming down and without a LBM, it would have gone the other way.

Hello Mrs "not so" HappyNow, sorry to hear you are feeling a bit glum. However, appreciate the fact that despite this struggle you have managed to decrease your debt rather than increase it. That is an excellent achievement considering how difficult things have been recently.
