I'm going to investigate avocado. Unbelievably I have never tried it.

    • Lights out by 11.30pm Tick, instant payback. Awake by 5.45.
I didn't wake up until 9:30 which sounds luxurious until I add that I didn't get to sleep until 4am!
    • Make 100 sales cold calls by 31.1.17 Must do the research for this, although it's too early to be making the calls themselves *phew*
100 is a lot. Ambitious, I like it.
    • One random act of kindness or public service a day Wrote two letters that I didn't need to write, but knew doing so would be a good thing to do. I'm trying to convince myself that only counts as one RAK but I know at some point in the month I'm going to snurgle the second letter in on a day that I don't do something.
Oh it should deffo count as two RAKs. Just post the second one a day later.
    • Record something lovely that happens every day so that at the end of the year when I empty the jar I'll remember all the good things that happened Tick. Hmm, though, because I had to think hard about what had happened that qualified as Lovely, as opposed to experiencing a perfectly happy day all day which was surprising.
Surprising isn't it? One of my targets on an earlier month was to 'do something fun every day' and after the first week I realised I don't generally have much fun :D
    • After 7th January cut out sugar until 1st February. Off the hook on this one which explains the vast amount of chocolate I scoffed. Finishing it up, you understand.
    Indeed, understood.

Oh dear. Day two is really a bit early to be making excuses, but here I go.
    • Money. Tick. Been home all day and no spends.
    • Healthy eating inc 5 x F & V. Breakfast: porridge. Lunch: cheese sandwich in cheap white bread. Currants and raisins (encased in a Mr Kipling mince pie, served warm with squirty cream :o) Snack: five after eight mints. Tea: veggie chilli with rice. Apple crumble and custard. Today was the MSE leftover thing, yesterday was as a result of letting Mr H go to Tesco. Snack: fresh orange juice. Rubbish, but the excuse is that I needed to go shopping but didn't because I've been busy working on next door's refurb. Tomorrow will be better.
    • Only one sweet treat: Haha NO
    • Only one small alcoholic drink: Yes, although I would have dearly liked a second.

Perhaps New Year can start properly for me when the boys go back to school later this week...or next week. Or I can just cut myself some slack and try to do better. I actually managed to lose 5lbs over December so I can't have been that bad. Still have about another stone or more to go - will see how it looks when I get the next half stone off, and keep going accordingly.

I think you should cut yourself a lot of slack. There are 12 Days of Christmas and it ends on 6 January. I think you should be gentle on yourself to take note of that and stop beating yourself up. Christmas really isn't one day and then one day of recovery - it's all 12. I only started thinking that after I met OH because of his birthday and now I feel much more relaxed about the beginning of January, which is cold, there's nothing to look forward to until Easter and the house is still full of Christmas gibble and leftovers. So I'm gentle on myself and it works just fine. You lost 5lbs in December! Woo hoo!

Not rubbish, it just goes to show how difficult eating healthily is, and that's why it's still appearing as a monthly targetty goal thing. You did sort of make it ....

Morries sell small net bags of five avocados that are unripe which is affordable and the best way to buy them. They're ripe when they 'give' towards the neck end, and I'm afraid they will all ripen at pretty much the same time. They're lovely with salt, OH likes a teaspoon of olive oil on his and they're fab on toast, but skip the butter because that's all you can taste if you use it. Nigella has a complicated way of doing it but frankly mashed and scattered with a bit of salt is good enough for me.

    • Only one sweet treat: Haha NO
See above about the 12 Days of Christmas.
    • Only one small alcoholic drink: Yes, although I would have dearly liked a second.
Well done, and for denying yourself that second one, which is such a toughie I never managed to crack it, I think the F&V thing is a Pass.

They'd worry if you suddenly, every day, ringing every single day. They'd think you knew something they didn't and you were keeping it from them, wouldn't they?
    • Keep house tidy: Meh, it's not too bad......

All in all, a fair stab I reckon.
    Better is good enough.

    • Five fruit and veg a day: Grapefruit, raisins, veggie curry with cucumber raita, spinach
    • Lights out by 11.30pm Tick. Didn't wake up until 7.00am, so I can only think yesterday was harder work than I realised at the time.

    • After 7th January cut out sugar until 1st February. Sticking to 12 Days of Christmas rather well.
    * I have to return a library book today, 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's and Age Related Memory Loss because I've had it so long - because I kept forgetting about it! I spent the whole day taking extensive notes and it seems there is a massive amount we can do to help ourselves starting anytime. It's the thing that worries me more than anything, healthwise, and I'm mightily reassured by reading it that OH and I are doing quite a lot of things already, one of which is social interaction. It was that nugget that made me realise that while I'm carp at face to face socialising, I'm very happy anonymously online, hence the Lovely Thing for the memory jar. Lightbulb moment, and all that. Wouldn't have had it if it weren't for this thread, so Thanks, Happy.
    Better is good enough.

Thanks for congrats on losing the 5lb - to be honest I don't find December too bad for weight gain as I don't work much with other people so don't have all the socialising, don't like many sweet things and don't drink spirits - and yes this is all offset by cheese, crisps, wine, pate etc but I was ridiculously busy in December and that necessitated more walking as that's my mode of transport so it all sort of worked in my favour.
However I do feel like I want to hibernate in January and February and that's where I can put weight back on again especially when combined with comforting foods. So the next few weeks is where I will have to be careful. Hopefully some of the busy-ness will continue into the New Year and I can carry on as I would really like to get the rest of this weight off and then work out maintenance. I was supposed to start with a running group in September but didn't manage to pursue it and there's another opportunity to start in January but I'm not sure the cold and dark will entice me.

Waah, mad busy day but managed to skid in before midnight. Back tomorrow to read back but here's my quick update for today.
    • Money. Spent £19 at Tessies but no crap bought. Cat and dog food and fruit & vegetables only. Stupid YNAB still won't balance so I must have mixed something up in the holiday spending chaos. Tomorrow I need to sort it.
    • Healthy eating/drinking. Good excuse coming up! First the good news - I have eaten my 5 x F & V. BUT tonight was the start of the new Celebrity Big Brother. I know it's junk TV but it's my guilty pleasure - and Little Miss Happy's. We have a tradition that on launch night we have a mini feast while we watch it. We call it our Big Bruffet.... (groan!)!!! Tonight's Big Bruffet consisted of several vege samosas, onion bhajis, veg pakoras, two glasses of wine, a large slice of chocolate cake and a Cadbury's crème egg. Traditions are important!
    • Daily Admin - nothing in the post
    • Admin catch up - been at work all day and feasting all night, so it's bookmarked for tomorrow.
    • Ring parents - they rang me to sort out some solicitor stuff and all is well :)
    • Keep house tidy. Mr H hasn't been working today so he has done it and I like that very much

Well done on f & V Happy... I absolutely agree would have been rude to ignore your tradition!

    1. Wash make up off every night... I am terrible at the moment leaving it on Done!
    2. Start cycling to work again Done
    3. Log calories again (best way I find of keeping me on track. Not started logging yet but not had junk although had pie for dinner
    4. Exercise 3 days a week cycled in and did yoga at lunch but only counting exercise as weights or energetic cycling... which it was not so still on 1/3
    5. Stick to my new budget so far so good!
    6. Work on learning Afrikaans at least once a week not yet
    7. Do more fun things and stop obsessing about friendships gone wrong the reason this is in here is recently been really struggling with anger at the friend who I basically walked away from earlier in the year. Our 'group' of friends is still close with her and it makes me angry as I feel she has never had to answer for how she acted... I realise the anger is only hurting me but not sure how to stop it. A joint friend is getting married this year so maybe its knowing will have to see her at hen do and wedding... hmmmm hate feeling this way!
