if you don't have no claims bonus protection (on a maximum NCB) and you do make a substantial claim, how much do you typically stand to lose when you reinsure in a year's time? (roughly)
I have some good quotes but they have no NCB protection.
  • Not too sure that it applies to home insurance - it does to vehicles though. Well if it does and going by what happened to us with Morethan, we went from free contents to having them included the next year, so possibly 50% added for combined?
You could try ringing up one of the companies you have a quote from and speak to an underwriter. Doubt if the phone person would have a clue, but an underwriter should.

Property insurance coverage protects your property against many risks. The two things that keep you from enjoying a more affordable rate at the moment are the right information and a motivation to make use of the recommendations you get Period.Make sure you don't fail to subtract the land's value from the home's value while applying for a policy. Those who ignorantly do this are paying a lot more than would be of any benefit. You have made same mistake if you insured your house for the cost you purchased it without checking the cost of the land it is standing on and deducting it.

I have spent hours now just trying unsuccessfully to get quotations via the MSE site(s) for CONTENTS Insurance but have been frustrated at all attempts - filling in details time after time and then at the end being told either 'timed out' or not able to quote. Property Insurance quotations are no problem it would appear. Some questionaires ask to cover certain valuables in the house but when it comes to 'valuables away from the house' then leaves little space for 'bulk cover' whilst away-who knows what we will be wearing/taking with us 'whilst away from home' - biggest frustration is having to fill in every single detail about the accommodation to start with (including the question - is your house subject to flooding and other similar questions .. Can anyone suggest a simple site for multi quotations that asks comprehensive questions of the cover required that does not involve repetitive details and covers valuables adequately ?
  • Are you perchance going to insurers direct and finding that they will not quote?
Far easier to fill in one form on Go compare or it should be. It's never timed out when I have done it.
You fill in your personal details first, then select if you want both types of cover or just the contents or the buildings. It should then take you through some questions like do you want accidental cover included and contents away from home. In our case we select accidental but not away from home as we simply do not have anything of that kind of value. So that coverage not needed. Does this help?
To get the savings, you have to go down the insurers comparison sites as MArtin lists them and in that order. Once you have the type of cover for the approx price, you can then fine tune it to get a quote/cover that you need with an excess that you can afford. Then you can try a cash back site like Quidco to see if the insurer concerned has an offer for new customers and sometimes get a substantial bit back. Beware though of Cashback offered by the actual companies and the prices quoted as they are not always cheaper. Work them out and read all info carefully.
  • I took out my home insurance when I bought my first house two years ago and I was amazed that I managed to save $200.

Can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere to read reviews of Insurers (building & contents) to find the best customer service and claims handling etc
I have been on all the comparison sites and found Privilege to be cheapest (although I have no idea what their customer service rating is) but I don't mind paying a bit more if I can find a 5 star insurer as I think it is very important to have good customer service especially if your house has been burnt down or burgled!
When you compare enrgy suppliers you always get the customer service rating but they don't seem to do this for house insurance
    Can anyone advise further?
    Many thanks
  • Hi All

I am so sorry if this in the wrong place but I cant find how to start a new thread!

Please can someone help? I was burgled in November, they took all my jewellery. A loss adjuster was sent round in January, and she agreed to recommend the insurers settle my claim. Today I had a call from the loss adjusters stating that they will offer me £10,100 if i take vouchers, or £6,700 if i want cash. They have also not quoted for 2 items as they dont know the value (???), yet when i queried why there is such a big drop (my pricing was £9,800) I was told it is because vouvhers equal replacement costs (at their chosen jewellers) but cash equals 'Cost' price. When I then stated that I could not buy at cost, i was told that there was no negotiation and their hands were tied. I was also told that they would not replace some items and give me the rest in cash.

The fact that they simply decided not to quote for 2 items makes me suspicious and the fact that they are wanting to pay me almost 40% less because i want cash seems very very unreasonable. Infact i asked them to replace some items but they won't. It's one or the other accroding to them. So I have asked them for an itemised breakdown of each item and their costings, to which they loss adjusters replied "Ooh i've never been asked for that before, and i dont know if i can let you have it anyway" I think I have tried to be reasonable, after all, I didnt ask the burglars to come in and take my things, the loss adjuster agreed tp ay my claim and I am happy to let them replace some of the items for me. It's a big big ask to expect someone to take that amount of money in vouchers. i thought, having read posts on here, that they would deduct between 10 & 20 percent if i wanted cash....they seem very aggressive.

Are they trying to pull fast one here? what should i do?

All help would be very much appreciated.

    many thanks

Are any of the items sentimental items that you do not intend replacing due to them being sentimental?

Are there items that the Insurers jewellers cannot arrange equivalent replacements of ?

Are there items you simply are not going to replace ?
  • Hi there

There were so many items that were stolen, and that i had built up over 43 years, so it would be hard to replace all of them. I am left with nothing so yes there are items that i would definately be replacing, but some no.

The 2 items they have not quoted on are just not quoted but there was no explanation as to why, I am now waiting for this.

Really not sure what to do.

I guess, the way I feel is that it should be up to me what i replace, and where i get it from?

I just feel that that amount of vouchers is not fair, and the difference between cash or vouvhers is unfair too. I know that the vouchers costs the insurance company way way less than they give me.

Thank you for replying, any ideas???
