I suspect I'm onto a loser here, since an exhaustive search hasn't yielded anything but here goes.

Our flat has a very low danger of burglary for several factors, and my girlfriend and I own very little of interest to burglars, but we are concerned about the destruction of our stuff and our few valuables by fire.

Are there any insurers who offer insurance on a fire-only basis?

As usual, many thanks in advance for all assistance offered.

    Cheers,

    Nick

You will not find any insurers that offer fire only cover anymore.

There are lots of potential claims for a flat owner, the main ones is damage to either your flat from water (Either from the flat above or the roof) and a leak in your flat (That you are deemed legally liable for) causing damage to the flat below.

If you genuinely want fire cover why not just increase the policy excess although bear in mind the saving you make is very low so is often not economically viable

Thanks, dacouch. Sounds sensible to me.

    Bah.
  • One of the big tension you are always having from the insurance policies, I never prefer to adapt the insurance policies. It is true that they are best in many cases, but when you are going to apply for claim, you are always wondering that how you can get money from these companies.

    hi all

I haven't had home or contents insurance for a few years because I couldn't afford it. So how do I answer the question about no claims? Also does £20K sound reasonable cover for a single person in a terraced house?

I sought a quote from Aviva this afternoon via Quidco [currently £55 back], and they came up with £265 for basic. I filled in the not having had insurance for the past 5 years, also no claims in that time, and specified £20K contents although I am not a very hi tech person.

Even getting that far took me a couple of hours, so I've been reading on here ever since, and don't even know what trace & thingy is!

Any tips? Should I try confused.com using an alternative email address so as not to get swamped? The trouble is I don't know what to put in for criteria, requirements, etc.

Try getting a quote direct from the Aviva website as some insurers increase their premiums for quotes from Quidco more than the cash back. (Try clearing your cookies first).

Also try a local broker as they will have good rates for first timers.

Personally I would select cover of at least £25k for a single person in a terrace house

I'm considering getting contents insurance for a ground floor flat that has been flooded in both 2005 and 2009 (Cumbria Floods).

I'm assuming that the comparison sites won't work for me - exceptional circumstances.

    All suggestions welcome.

I would ask people to be wary of the low quotes from Aviva, while they used to be formerly the reputable Norwich Union Insurance group, I took out building and contents insurance with them and had to lodge a claim to deal with roof and water damage caused by the snow this last winter. They were slow in offering to have their roofing contrctors to repair the damage, then it started raining with water leaking inside which ruined the hand made curtains and interior decor and they still could not say when ther roofing people could come out, they advised me to have a local roofing contractor to deal with the damage. This is i did and he was duly paid £1260 by us with a view to claiming the money back off the insurance company. 4 months down the line since i lodged the claim they have procrastinated and nitpicked with every excuse not to pay the claim which amounts to nearly £4000 overall. I have now complained to the CEO of Aviva and awaiting their reply.
I am not impressed as they are quick to run advertising campaigns on tv offering peace of mind, far from it , it has been nothing but aggravation and inconvenience and i am still out of pocket.

It's normally best to stay with the same insurer who paid the flood claims

    Hi dacouch,

Forgot to say, I didn't have contents insurance at the time of the flood, so I'm starting from scratch.

And the Buildings insurance is a joint policy commercial scheme (many of the other flats are commercial lets), covering 12 flats, so I don't have a personal relationship with any insurer.
